E3: 'Silent Hill: Origins' trailer

I've played every Silent Hill game since 1999's original on the PlayStation, and if there's one thing I had always wanted, it was a portable version. Well, thanks to Konami, Silent Hill: Origins, exclusive to the PSP, will be released November 13. Origins is a prequel to the Silent Hill series in which you come into contact with characters from the later games.

E3: A first-timer's retrospective

My time here in Santa Monica is coming to a close, and I'm still not sure how I feel about my first E3 experience. I knew that it wasn't going to be as over-the-top as years past, but I guess its reputation was still built up in my mind.

Apparently, going smaller also means going more spread out. I don't think I went to a meeting or a shoot in the same location twice! From the Fairmont Hotel (valet parking was full, I had to double-park blocks away to pick up my registration pass) to the Barker … Read more

Sony BMG sues CD vendor over rootkits

Sony BMG Music Entertainment is suing an antipiracy CD software company claiming that the technology provided was flawed. In November 2005, researcher Mark Russinovich discovered hidden files left behind on computers when certain Sony copy-protected CDs were played. The subsequent consumer complaints and government investigations, says Sony, cost the entertainment company millions of dollars in losses.

Now Sony BMG has filed a complaint against The Amergence Group, formerly SunnComm International, a company that produced the piracy-protection system known as MediaMax CD. According to the Associated Press, Sony BMG is seeking $12 million in damages for unfair business practices and for … Read more

E3: 'Unreal Tournament III' trailer

Die-hard deathmatch fans have been waiting for a true Unreal Tournament sequel since UT2004 hit PCs more than three years ago. The lastest iteration will be exclusive to the PC and PS3 "in 2007" when it hits in November--wording that makes us think it's highly likely we'll see the game (or a reasonable facsimile) appearing on the 360 at some point next year. But no matter--PS3 owners will still relish the chance to get first dibs on the game, which is powered by the same Unreal Engine 3 graphics engine that made Gears of War such … Read more

E3: 'echochrome' trailer

It's no secret that casual games are making their presence felt in the era of next-gen gaming. echochrome is a puzzle game that resembles something out of an M.C. Escher painting. You must guide the main character (who looks like a wood-jointed mannequin) through increasingly complex environments filled with portals and hidden gaps. echochrome will be released on the PS3's PlayStation Network as well as the PSP.

How E3 changes the video game industry each year

As someone who owns an NES, SNES, Genesis, 3D0, every version of the Gameboy, PSP, DS, PlayStation, Dreamcast, Saturn, Xbox, GameCube, Nintendo 64, PlayStation 2 and 3, Xbox 360 and Wii (phew!), I was always a big fan of games and the news that used to come in May at E3. And while my love of video games has cooled over the past few years, the recent E3 coverage has me thinking: what will the next year of gaming actually bring?

Although it isn't nearly as big as it used to be, E3 is still the industry's premier … Read more

E3 2007: 'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune'

The list of notable PS3-exclusive games thus far has been thin, to say the least. While first-person shooters and driving games are well represented, a good traditional third-person action/adventure has not. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, first seen at a Sony press preview a few months ago, aims to fill that niche with elements lovingly lifted from popular games such as the Tomb Raider and Far Cry.

It's pretty standard third-person exploration, as Drake clambers over obstacles in a remote jungle location, a la Lara Croft. Of course, the location isn't remote enough to prevent untold numbers of … Read more

E3 2007: Sony's big ol' press conference

If there's one thing that seems very familiar about this year's E3 video game show, it's the lavishly produced, but oddly stilted press conferences from the big three game console makers: Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft.

Sony has a unique home court advantage in Los Angeles, and the company has hosted its E3 press conference at Sony's own Culver City studios in recent years. Despite saving a few bucks on renting a presentation space, last year's 2006 Sony press conference was an infamous dud, thanks in large part to the unveiling of the PlayStation 3's $… Read more

Sony unveils minor PSP upgrade

Those rumors about a PSP redesign turned out to be true--sorta. Demoed onstage at the Santa Monica E3 show by Sony's Kaz Hirai, the new PSP doesn't look all that different on the outside, but it's said to be 33 percent lighter, 19 percent slimmer, offer better battery life, faster game load times, and video output to TVs.

Separately, the company will also bow PSPs in two new colors: "ice silver" and a Star Wars-themed white PSP emblazoned with Darth Vader's visage. Both the colored PSPs will be available in "Entertainment Pack" … Read more

E3: 'Killzone 2' trailer

The original trailer for Killzone 2 at E3 2005 featured notoriously prerendered cinematics that raised expectations for the game beyond any reasonable level--or so we thought. Last night--more than two years later--developer Guerrilla showed off a playable demo that may have detractors eating their words. If the trailer is any indication of the final game--due out in 2008--it looks as if Sony's finally got a PS3 exclusive that will have Xbox 360 owners green with envy.
