A second (more complete) look at the Nvidia 3D Vision Kit

Last month, I did a first take on the Nvidia GeForce 3D Vision Kit. At the time, I'd only very briefly tested it and not at all thoroughly. Since then, thanks to help from Nvidia (new glasses, video card, and monitors) I've been able to move past the bugs mentioned in the first take.

This time, I did it big with an NVidia GeForce 280GTX, baby! Playing around with this card made me weep, as it's only $330, vs. the $600 ATI card I bought three years ago that's starting to disappoint me.

With the new … Read more

Samsung's 120Hz LCD monitor performance tested, revealed

120Hz LCD gaming is now officially here! What? Oh, I'm late to the party? We've been able to do this for years now? Oh. OK. Let me rephrase that then. 120Hz gaming on a 22-inch LCD computer monitor is officially here! Does that satisfy your anal retentiveness? Well, it better.

Last month I reviewed the ViewSonic VX2265wm. The first 120Hz LCD computer monitor CNET's reviewed. I gave it points for its compatibility with the Nvidia GeForce 3D Vision Kit, but its lack of features and overall average performance didn't win my recommendation.

This week, I have … Read more

Samsung to launch two Android devices in U.S.

During Samsung's press conference at CTIA 2009, company executives didn't have much to say about its Android plans, other than that it's on track to deliver devices during the second half of 2009.

However, Samsung Mobile's executive vice president of global product strategy, Won-Pyo Hong, was feeling a little more chatty and revealed some new details in a conversation with Forbes.

While Hong didn't get any more specific about release dates, he did say the United States will get two smartphones using Google's mobile operating system later this year and that they will be … Read more

Samsung jilts Intel but where's Nvidia?

Samsung's NC20 Netbook shows that Via Technologies' Nano processor can keep up with the Joneses. But will Nvidia be given the chance?

CNET Reviews' Dan Ackerman reviewed the new Samsung NC20 Netbook and found it not wanting in a matchup with the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, packing Intel's latest and greatest Atom N280.

Though Nano is a necessary industry antidote to Intel's grip on the Netbook market, in the scheme of market share numbers, Via's chip is a blip at best.

I find it almost amusing when Intel lists Via as one of two competitors (Advanced … Read more

Via challenges the Intel Atom for Netbook supremacy in the Samsung NC20

Samsung's NC20stands out from the crowd in two very important ways. First, it's one of only a handful of 12-inch Netbooks (the best-known example being Dell's Vista-addled Mini 12); secondly, it's the first laptop we've tested with Via's Nano CPU, intended as an alternative to Intel's popular Atom processor.

The Atom is found in virtually every other Netbook, so it's always good to see some competition, and the new Nano managed to fight Intel to a tie, beating it in some benchmarks and falling behind in others.

Samsung touts TouchWiz phones, opens UI

In addition to the Samsung Mondi and Instinct s30, Samsung announced its plans to add mobile-connected applications to future TouchWiz cell phones and smartphones at CTIA 2009.

The company said it has been working with Yahoo, Google, and AccuWeather.com to bring one-touch access to Yahoo OneSearch, Google search, and worldwide weather information right from the home screen of your mobile.

The new apps will come preloaded on select TouchWiz devices and will be available through the widget tray, such as the one found on the Samsung Omnia. However, it doesn't stop there.

Samsung said it will release an … Read more

Samsung's Android non-news

By now, you've probably heard that Samsung revealed the Samsung Mondi and Samsung Instinct s30 during a press conference on Tuesday night, one day before the official start of CTIA 2009. At the end of the event, there was a Q&A session and one of the questions that came up was the status of Samsung's Google Android devices.

Unfortunately, the company didn't have much to say, other than what we already know. (Hey, I'm just passing along the message, so don't shoot me, OK?) Samsung said it is absolutely committed to the Open … Read more

Samsung takes another pass at the Instinct

You can usually rely on Samsung to drop a load of new phones every trade show, and CTIA 2009 is no exception. After announcing several new phones for AT&T and a WiMax-enabled device, Samsung on Tuesday evening unveiled a successor to the Samsung Instinct. The Instinct S30, which comes almost a year to the day after its predecessor, offers minimal feature and design upgrades. Be sure to check out our Samsung Instinct S3 photo gallery.

As you might expect, the Instinct S30 is all about the touch screen. The 3.2-inch display supports 262,000 colors and 432x240-pixel … Read more
