CES: Get ready, Korea...here comes the Galaxy Player

LAS VEGAS--If you're on the market for a replacement for that aging iPod Touch, Samsung's new Galaxy Player probably isn't going to cut it. Not that we think the Android-based device, announced at CES today, is a terrible thing. In fact, it has a lovely-looking 3.2-inch touch screen, a rear- and front-facing cameras, and a retractable antenna for picking up DTV broadcasts. Add to that Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS functionality as well as an SD card expansion slot and easily-removable battery, and this device is actually looking pretty sweet.

Samsung debuts Wi-Fi-only Galaxy Tab

LAS VEGAS--Samsung revealed this week that its Galaxy Tab recently passed a 1.5 million global shipment milestone and the company isn't content to rest on the laurels of the tablet's initial success.

Today the company announced that a Wi-Fi-only version of the Galaxy Tab will be available in the United States in early 2011.

Other than that detail, the new Galaxy Tab looks to be identical (spec-wise) to the one already released, but let's list its specs anyway, for good measure.

RIM rejects claims of weak PlayBook battery

RIM has rebutted recent claims that its upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is hampered by a short battery life.

On Tuesday, Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu issued a report in which he cited unnamed sources saying that the PlayBook's battery lasts only a few hours, compared with Samsung's Galaxy Tab, which lasts for six hours, and Apple's iPad, which runs for 10 hours on single charge. The analyst pointed to the weak battery life as a reason why Research In Motion has delayed the launch of the device until the company's May 2011 quarter.

Opera 11 joins the add-ons club

Mobile Opera may be driving the Norwegian browser company's growth, but that doesn't mean that the desktop browser is getting ignored. Debuting today, Opera 11 for Windows, Mac, and Linux has only gotten more stable since the beta version of the browser launched last month.

The most requested of the new features is the lightweight extension API framework, which brings to Opera a long-missing capability to directly add to and customize the browser. Having launched while the browser was in beta, there are already several popular extensions available, including ad-blocker NoAds; YouTube downloader FastestTube; Image Preview Popup for … Read more

Samsung's Galaxy Tab red flag for Intel

No. 2 chipmaker Samsung is showing Intel how to succeed in the brave new world of tablets and smartphones.

While Intel is the largest chipmaker in the world, Samsung is No. 2. And, unlike Intel, it also has a large and successful affiliated consumer arm that churns out products like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Not surprisingly, many of those products use Samsung silicon too.

That's a vertically integrated strategy that Intel can't match. And that's not all. Samsung also supplies chips to outside customers (Intel's business model) like Apple which use its chips in outrageously popular … Read more

Crave Extras: Samsung Galaxy Tab eyes Apple iPad

Last week I posted a video of the Samsung Galaxy Tab (Verizon Wireless) and Apple iPad running through a few quick performance tests. Some of the responses were...fevered to say the least. Just wait until my Galaxy Tab vs. iMac video drops!

In the meantime, Donald Bell and I discuss how the Galaxy Tab's efforts to take over the world are repeatedly foiled by the iPad and how Android, in its current state, may not make for the best tablet OS.

iPhone 4, Nexus S--rivals with a common core

Apple's iPhone 4 and Google's freshly minted Nexus S share a critical core component inside, underscoring Samsung's presence in some of the most popular devices on the market and how it triangulates relationships between its own products and chip customers.

Google makes no bones about what's inside its slick Samsung-manufactured Nexus S: a 1GHz "Hummingbird" processor. That's a close cousin of--if not identical in many respects to--the processor inside of Apple's A4 system-on-a-chip, as a TechInsights analysis (PDF) revealed earlier this year.

"It's common in the electronics industry for competitors … Read more
