YouMail visual voice mail iPhone app gets pushy

We're big fans of visual voice mail, which lets you view, and then listen to, your voice mail messages in any order you'd like, not just chronologically. It's even better when that service is free (voice-to-text transcriptions, however, are typically extra). To that end, we were happy to see that YouMail's visual voice mail app for iPhone updated on Thursday, getting features such as push notification, and a new activities ribbon that lets you reply to and forward messages. You can also now organize messages by folders.

In addition, YouMail 1.5 includes a feature for … Read more

Black Wii accessories land November 16

Starting November 16, Nintendo will begin offering black accessories to match the black Wii console that you don't have. A black Wii remote and MotionPlus will be sold for $50, and the black nunchuk will go separately for $20.

We've speculated about a possible black Wii making its way stateside before, so it's certainly surprising to see black accessories landing on store shelves before the actual black console does. Could this be a taste of things to come?

Sidekick outage casts cloud over Microsoft

The massive data failure at Microsoft's Danger subsidiary threatens to put a dark cloud over the company's broader "software plus services" strategy.

A key tenet of that approach is that businesses and consumers can trust Microsoft to reliably store valuable data on their servers.

A week ago, though, Microsoft's Danger unit experienced a huge outage that left many T-Mobile Sidekick users without access to their calendar, address book, and other key data. That's because the Sidekick keeps nearly all its data in the cloud as opposed to keeping the primary copy on the devices … Read more

Project management program

MinuteManPlus has several tools for organizing the time budgets for various projects. The program offers an impressive amount of options, but fails to pull ahead of its competition.

We found MinuteManPlus's biggest problem to be its interface. The program offered far too many options and didn't label its commands well enough for us to easily navigate. We were constantly trying to figure out how to get back to a previous screen or understand exactly how the current screen was different from the previous. The program's primary function was listing events and their durations. We could view several … Read more

Wii Sports Resort for 2: Save a little money on a bundle

Now that the Nintendo Wii is $199, there are two ways to go about using your savings: putting it in a low-risk bank account, or buying the rest of the peripherals Nintendo wants you to have to complete your Wii experience. Wii Fit notwithstanding, the biggest new plug-in Nintendo has is Wii MotionPlus, the motion sensor enhancement that plugs into the back of every Wii remote. And, sadly, they're still not included with the Nintendo Wii.

In an attempt to make amends, Wii Sports Resort is now selling a $59.99 bundle that includes two MotionPlus accessories instead of … Read more

Star Trek creator's Mac being auctioned

Updated 2.14pm PST with a correction from Profiles in History

There could be some high-pitched squealing and ethereally egregious excitement afoot when serial number F4200NUM0001 goes up for auction on October 8 and 9.

For this serial number represents the bidding war that is sure to ensue when a certain Apple Macintosh Plus is offered to the public's paddles.

This is no ordinary Macintosh. This was thought to be the first Macintosh Plus ever made. (See correction below) And its owner was Gene Roddenberry. Yes, he whose fingers went where no man had ever gone before.

According to Reuters, … Read more

Hands-on: IM+ for iPhone's speech-to-text feature

Typing on the iPhone/iPod Touch's keyboard can be arduous. This is never more evident than when trying to bang out messages in several instant-messaging conversations at once. Shape Services, the makers of the popular IM+ instant-messaging app ($9.99 App Store link), have realized this, and are soon rolling out a new version of the app that includes speech-to-text, albeit at a price.

Taking advantage of Apple's recently released in-app payment system, 99 cents a month gets you the feature, meaning that the annual cost of continuing to use it is about $12 a year. Not bad … Read more

BrowserPlus rides on Yahoo Messenger coattails

Yahoo has begun bringing its BrowserPlus technology to a broader audience, making installation of the browser-boosting plug-in a default part of installing the beta of the new Yahoo Messenger 10 that emerged this week.

BrowserPlus gives Web sites some better abilities taken for granted in applications that run natively on a computer, and because it's a framework, new abilities can be added later. Among the current features are the ability to drag files from the desktop to the browser, to read accelerometer data to judge a computer's orientation, to edit images, and to upload many files at once. … Read more
