Download now, or pay later for Wii surfing

Be sure to hook your Wii up to the Internet and download the Internet Channel soon. That's the deadline for downloading it for free.

So, what exactly is the Internet Channel? It's the feature that lets you use your Wii to browse the Internet from your television with the Opera Web browser.

Right now, the download for using the Internet-surfing feature is free for the life of the machine. But Opera released a "final" version of the feature in April, and soon you'll have to pay for it. As of July 1, anyone wishing to … Read more

Opera introduces Opera Mini 4 beta

What's the best way to improve mobile browsing? Make it as flexible and powerful as desktop browsing, only lighter. Opera, the Norwegian rival to Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari, hopes to replicate the familiarity of the desktop experience with the latest version of its mobile browser, code-named Dimension. So far the response has been positive.… Read more

Photos: Archos 605 WiFi in the wild

As reported earlier, the new Archos PVPs are due out at the beginning of September. Unfortunately, Jasmine and I couldn't wait that long, so we contacted the product reps at Archos to schedule some one-on-one time. The following is a photo gallery that details some of the new features we can expect from the new line once it launches (plus some shots of the set-top DVR prototype).

Category: Browsing

Opera is one of the oldest browsers around. It's also made its way into all sorts of consumer electronics, including mobile phones, gaming portables, and even home video game consoles. Opera has combined many technological services into its desktop Web browser and is commonly regarded as the first to implement tabs for viewing multiple Web pages in the same window.

Interestingly enough, Opera has also built-in a BitTorrent client. Users who want to partake in the peer-to-peer file sharing technology can do so while continuing their other browsing habits.

One of Opera's latest offerings is called … Read more

Opera Software sings security note

Just a few days ago, Opera Software was singing the blues.

It turned out that unsavory attackers could craft malicious torrent files, which, in turn, could lead to a buffer overflow in Opera for Microsoft Windows users, according to Opera's security advisory.

And that's not a good thing.

These attackers could inject arbitrary code into users' systems, if they right clicked on a torrent entry in the transfer manager, resulting in a buffer overflow. Fortunately, for some, simply clicking on a torrent link would not trigger the vulnerability.

Opera, which was notified of the flaw on May 8 … Read more

Wii Internet Channel finally out of beta. Google wonders how Opera does it.

Have you ever wanted to browse the Web on your Wii? Well now you... have been able to do it for a few months. Okay, so the Internet Channel has been available for a while now. That's not really the point. The real news is that Opera has released the final version of the Internet Channel. The browser released in late December was a beta version so Opera could tweak it before releasing the final product.

This final version of the Internet Channel adds several new features to the program. The most notable changes are the addition of a … Read more

Evening roundup: Viacom sued, MySpace photo albums, Wii browser delayed

Viacom sued over Colbert parody on YouTube. A takedown notice for a parody video clip of The Colbert Report was the cause for a lawsuit against Viacom by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The video featured several short clips from the popular late-night TV show, along with user-generated content. Viacom said it doesn't mind the video being shown on the service.

MySpace photos upgraded. MySpace rolled out an update to its photo service last night, giving users the option to create albums and manage shots en masse with a batch uploading tool. Size limits on uploaded photos have also doubled … Read more

Enhance your Wii's browser with Wiiminder

Wiiminder is a site that adds functionality to your Wii browser. Navigating to Wiiminder.com on your Wii provides you with multiple tabs, a search tool, an address bar, and a really neat drag and drop favorites folder that's much snappier than the one that ships with the Opera browser. Best of all, all the buttons disappear when not in use, saving precious screen real estate. There's also a tie-in with Finetune, the Internet radio service I looked at earlier this month.

Wiiminder takes care of several issues I found on my comparison of the Opera browser to the Playstation 3's. … Read more

News on your Wii? Sure, why not

Wow, you really can do just about everything with your Wii. You can play tennis or baseball, check the weather, fight bad guys...and now, stay informed on what's going on in the world. News will be supplied by the Associated Press, which has inked a two-year deal with Nintendo. So far, it's just news stories and photographs, but you never know what they might add next. This way, you can take a … Read more

Adobe Reader Open Parameters XSS

In a conference paper titled "Subverting Ajax," security researchers Stefano Di Paola and Giorgio Fedon identified multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities. One flaw in particular, the open parameters vulnerability, is quite easy to execute on vulnerable versions of Adobe Reader. A malicious attack can be carried out by referencing any Web-based PDF file and supplying potentially malicious JavaScript code as an open parameter to any Web-based PDF file. For example

http://www.(domain name).com/file.pdf#whatever_name_you_want=javascript:your_code_here

The researchers contacted Adobe in October with their findings and only recently made their work public. Adobe has … Read more
