As soon as the show floor opened at CTIA, we dashed over to the LG booth to take a look at its new eco-friendly phone, the LG Remarq. LG boasts that the Remarq is made of 19 percent recycled plastic and 87 percent of its parts are recyclable once you decide to get rid of it. According to LG, it has lowered the levels of polyvinyl chloride and brominated flame retardants in the phone, and they took care to make the packaging environmentally-friendly as well. The Remarq's charger earns high marks for energy efficiency too, and is an Energy … Read more
Hot on the heels of Monday's LG Remarq announcement by Sprint, Verizon announced yet another LG messaging phone Tuesday, dubbed the LG Cosmos. Though it doesn't have quite the same green cred as the Remarq, the Cosmos does have a similar slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Features include the typical text and multimedia messaging, plus a speakerphone, Bluetooth, GPS, voice command, automatic voice clarity, and a 1.3-megapixel camera that boasts 2x zoom and noise reduction. Verizon also says the Cosmos will have easy access to social-networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, and more.

A lot of critics accuse The 404 of resorting to juvenile humor for cheap laughs, and even if that's absolutely true, we've never had an actual 14 year old call us out on it...until this morning, when young Daniel showed up at the CNET office! Dedicated 404 listeners will remember Daniel as the kid who got robbed for his iPhone, so he joins us on today's episode as a junior podcaster to tell his story. And don't worry--his mother is fully aware of his location.
Daniel is visibly excited about the first topic of discussion, … Read more
Messaging phones retain their popularity, thanks to the legions of text-happy people everywhere. These handsets are phones with full or partial QWERTY keyboards, but that are not classified as smartphones. That doesn't mean they're dumb, though--many of them have high-end multimedia features, too. Here's a look at the top-10 best messaging phones that have come our way recently.
Since it was introduced in late 2008, VoxOx has tried to cut a name for itself in the competitive multiprotocol chat client market by providing users with an aggressive feature set. These include VoIP, a "personal assistant" for managing incoming calls with more than a simple redirect, and SMS and Web-based callback to cut down on the cost of long-distance, transnational calls. The latest improvement is a universal translator that translates all text-based messages in real time, and with a reasonable amount of accuracy, for both the Windows and Mac versions of the program. It will work with … Read more
The Samsung Freeform, which was once only available on the slowly disappearing Alltel network, is now available on U.S. Cellular, a regional carrier. The Freeform is a pretty simple messaging phone with a full QWERTY keyboard. It has a 1.3-megapixel camera and a 2.2-inch display, a music player, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, and a microSD card slot that can take up to 16GB cards. We liked the Alltel version of the Freeform, so here's hoping the U.S. Cellular model is just as good.
U.S. Cellular hasn't yet released pricing or availability information.

A recent update to Digsby, a controversial multiple-protocol instant-messaging client, focuses on enhancements specific to Windows 7 and tweaks several social-networking features.
Given the problem it had last year with its CPU cycle-grabbing shenanigans, one would think that Digsby would hold back from adding another service requiring those who don't want it to go through a post-installation opt-out process. But Digsby build 76 beta, released February 11 and announced broadly on Thursday, does just that with a OneRiot trending-news service it automatically added to users' social feeds. Users can disable the service in the General & Profile menu under … Read more
