Air meets iPad

A report on Friday claimed "anecdotal evidence" of the 11.6-inch MacBook air cannibalizing the iPad. Hmm...so, is that what Steve Jobs meant by iPad-meets-MacBook?

This research note came to me Friday from Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Rodman & Renshaw. "Signs of cannibalization: There is anecdotal evidence that the MacBook Air is cannibalizing the iPad. A fully functional notebook in a very attractive form factor may be resonating more with consumers than a content consumption only device."

That "content consumption only device" being the iPad, of course.

So, is this what happens … Read more

iTunes 10.1 available now, but iOS 4.2 remains MIA

Earlier this week, rumor had it that iTunes 10.1 would drop on Wednesday, followed by iOS 4.2 today. As Lance Whitney reported this morning, iOS 4.2 appears to have been delayed by a Wi-Fi bug--but what happened to iTunes 10.1?

It's here. I just downloaded it. You can get it yourself by heading to Apple's iTunes download page, or just clicking Help > Check for Updates in your current version of iTunes.

As expected, version 10.1 adds support for syncing with iOS 4.2-equipped devices--though iOS 4.2 itself remains MIA. Also included … Read more

Rumor: iOS 4.2 waylaid by Wi-Fi bug?

A Wi-Fi bug has reportedly sidelined Apple's iOS 4.2 update, which was rumored to be launching today.

MacStories, Engadget, and other blogs have pinned the cause of the delay on a Wi-Fi connectivity bug affecting the iPad. Users who've been testing the Gold Master release of the update on Apple's popular tablet reportedly have been able to establish a connection but not able to actually connect to anything, or are simply losing the connection after a few minutes.

Though Apple never announced an official release date for iOS 4.2, CEO Steve Jobs has said that … Read more

Friday Poll: 10-inch Tab to take on iPad?

Right now we're all following the rumors that Google might have another Nexus phone on its way, one perhaps made by Samsung that was leaked via Best Buy's Web site. But it's not the only mystery Samsung device floating around today.

At the FPD International 2010/Green Device 2010 trade show in Chiba, Japan, this week there's a mystery 10.1-inch, super-slim (1.8 mm!?) Samsung "ereader" being shown off. It's sporting a new flexible type of AMOLED display, but the prototype e-reader, instead of showing a book, is showing a very Galaxy … Read more

Nvidia CEO: Lots of Android tablets coming

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said a flood of Android tablets are on the way and repeated that they have to be "truly remarkable" in order to compete with the iPad. And traditional notebooks may imperiled by the deluge, according to Huang.

Nvidia reported earnings today for its most recent quarter, ending October 31. The Santa Clara, Calif., graphics chip supplier's profit slipped to $84.9 million, or 15 cents per share, from $107.6 million, or 19 cents per share, in the year-earlier quarter. Earnings were up, however, from this year's previous quarter, when the company … Read more

Soundfreaq delivers feature-packed speaker dock

When the Soundfreaq SFQ-1 Sound Platform speaker dock hit my desk, the odds were stacked against it. I had never heard of the company, but its intentionally misspelled name immediately conjured up visions of magician Chris Angel and bad '80s metal bands.

Fortunately, I was able to look past the name, because the Soundfreaq Sound Platform ($199) is one cool speaker. Chalk it up to being the new kid on the block with something to prove, but the Sound Platform includes tons of little extras and details that established brands such as Sony, Logitech, Philips, and Creative just don't … Read more

Lego Harry Potter coming to iPhone, iPad

Traveller's Tales' Lego video games (including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Batman) are among the wittiest and most entertaining I've ever played. My kids love 'em, too. Alas, though they've made appearances on all the major consoles as well as handheld systems like the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP, not one of the games has been ported to iOS. Until now.

According to a PR rep for Warner Bros. and TT Games, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 will be arriving "soon" for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Just how soon, the rep wouldn't say, … Read more

Restore iOS 4.2 AirPrint capabilities to Mac OS X 10.6.5

Perhaps peculiarly, Apple removed AirPrint from the public release of Mac OS X 10.6.5, an update largely expected to allow iOS 4.2 devices, such as the iPad, to print to shared network printers.

AppleInsider reports that users experimenting with various settings in Mac OS X 10.6.5 have discovered a way to bring the iOS AirPrint function back to your Mac. AirPrint uses CUPS technology, an open source Unix-friendly printing architecture, owned and maintained by Apple.

The CUPS filter used to convert the AirPrint URF format into PDF format for printing was the component removed from … Read more

Zombie Crisis 3D: Destroy dastardly demons

Zombie Crisis 3D is a rail shooter that gives users the pleasure of destroying zombies without the hassle of having to control the character's movement. This particular version of the popular zombie-themed games that populate Apple's App Store relies on a predetermined course through a multitude of levels to help players escape the zombie attack.

The loose storyline is fairly typical of most zombie games--escape. The plethora of creepy characters attacking you don't really stand out as particularly ground-breaking from a design standpoint, but certainly trump many attempts of competitors on the iOS platform.

Overall the game … Read more

iHome fires first shot in AirPlay speaker wars

Just as wireless Bluetooth speakers are starting to get some love from the surge of iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users over the past few years, Apple's new AirPlay wireless audio standard is setting out to make them obsolete.

Apple's own description page for its AirPlay technology (a part of iOS 4.2 and Apple TV) specifically mentions compatibility with the Bowers and Wilkins Zeppelin and upcoming Denon and Marantz receivers, but leaves out specifics on anything portable or affordable. Fortunately, iHome seems to have a solution for the rest of us.

The iHome iW1 is the company'… Read more
