Samsung Exclaim is a new dual-slider messenger

The Samsung Rant was released not long ago (in October 2008, in fact), but it seems Samsung and Sprint are already working on a successor. The Samsung Exclaim (sometimes I think Samsung plays Mad Libs with its product names) is slated to be the successor to the Rant, and the big difference is that it has a dual-slider design; the number keypad slides down, while the QWERTY keyboard slides to the left. The design is similar to that of the Pantech Matrix and the Helio Ocean 2.

It has a 2.6 inch QVGA display, EV-DO Rev. 0, support for … Read more

Flat-panel TV sales surge despite weak economy

The weak economy hasn't stalled the American consumer's flat-panel fix.

Following a decline last year, North American sales of flat-panel TVs surged during the first quarter of 2009, according to a report released Monday from market research company DisplaySearch. With demand often outpacing supply on some models, 7.2 million flat-panel TVs flew off the shelves, an increase of 23 percent from the first quarter of 2008.

Aggressive pricing followed by Circuit City's liquidation tempted consumers in search of bargains, according to the DisplaySearch report titled "Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report."

Samsung's a Magnet for AT&T

Besides releasing the Alias 2, Samsung on Monday announced the availability of its Magnet messaging phone for AT&T. Unveiled last month at CTIA, the Magnet is a very affordable $19.99 with service and a $30 mail-in rebate.

In case you don't remember, the Magnet has a standard candy bar design in bright orange. It's positioned as a low-end messaging phone and in many ways it looks the part. The display sits above the large navigation array and full alphabetic keyboard. Features include a camera, a personal organizer, and a speakerphone. We'll post a review … Read more

Verizon gets Samsung Alias 2

Samsung announced on Monday the third generation of its dual-hinged SCH-U740 messaging phone. The Alias 2 for Verizon Wireless adds more significant changes than the second generation Alias brought to the table, but it retains the same basic shape.

Its biggest attraction is an "E Ink" keyboard that changes according to user needs. When you open the phone vertically, the buttons shows only a numeric keypad for dialing. But when you open it horizontally, the buttons morph into a full QWERTY keyboard. Other controls, such as the navigation arrows and the soft keys, also change positions.

New 'Joe Kane projector' coming soon

Last year we awarded our Editors' Choice among front projectors to the Samsung SP-A800, saying the unit "outperforms every projector in its class hands-down." Its successor, the SP-A900, is coming soon, and we expect the new model to offer even better picture quality. For well-heeled home theater enthusiasts, the new SP-A900 will likely be the new Holy Grail of projection performance.

That expectation is based on the fact that both the SP-A800 and SP-A900 were designed with significant input from video guru Joe Kane who, among other accomplishments, created the reference calibration series Digital Video Essentials, including the … Read more

The iPhone's secret silicon: A need to know?

The precise specifications for many iPhone chips are murky. Should Apple be more open about its secret ingredients?

Granted, many people don't care about the silicon inside their iPhone. They just want it to work. That said, I think more than a few people would like to see the specifications for the iPhone's core silicon posted on Apple's Web site.

By comparison, take your typical laptop. Prospective buyers are able to see the exact specifications and make an informed buying decision. Though the iPhone isn't offered in different processor SKUs (models) like a laptop, the iPhone … Read more

Samsung A177 slated as budget messaging phone for AT&T

Just 'cause you're on a budget doesn't mean you can't get a messaging phone, as this Samsung A177 indicates. Made primarily for AT&T's prepaid GoPhone plans, the A177 is decidedly low-end, with only EDGE, probably a VGA camera, and not much else. But if you can only afford to go prepaid and you need a full QWERTY keyboard for texting, the A177 may be right for you. We don't know the pricing and availability just yet, but it'll probably be cheap, and available soon.

Review: Samsung BD-P4600 looks like UFO, plays Blu-rays

Editors' note: This review originally mentioned issues with the included USB Wi-Fi adapter when connected to the BD-P4600's internal USB port. Subsequent testing indicates that the problem was a faulty Wi-Fi adapter included with our review sample, as a replacement Wi-Fi adapter works perfectly. We have had no issues with the new USB Wi-Fi adapter, and the review and rating have been updated accordingly.

Samsung likes to say its "Touch of Color" design scheme elevates products to "works of art," but really it comes down to three main principles: rounded corners, translucent red highlights, and … Read more

Upcoming CNET HDTV reviews

Like most CNET editors, I get plenty of reader mail asking what products I'm reviewing next, so here's a list of HDTVs I have in-house or, according to the manufacturers, are scheduled for imminent arrival at CNET Labs East. Each list is arranged in general order of priority for review, although that order is by no means set in stone.
