Skullcandy takes MP3 fashion to the wrist

Multimedia watches have been on the market for awhile now, but most of them look like something a deep-sea diver might wear. Stylish headphone maker Skullcandy, however, has taken its considerable design expertise and applied it to the wrist instead of the ear with its "Bully" line.

We presume that the watch owes its name to its touted durability, including a non-scratch sapphire crystal and water resistance up to 100 meters. But it still seems like something of a misnomer, particularly for the pink version. It matters not: As someone famous once said, it's how you lookRead more

Financial sites MarketWatch, Cake get in on social networking

Financial advice takes a turn with the introduction of social networking features to Dow Jones' MarketWatch.com and Cake Financial, a new, entirely user-based investing community.

Just this week MarketWatch added MarketWatch Community, a Beta offshoot where users can post comments, rate articles, and try their hand at market forecasting.

Cake Financial, currently in Alpha, passes over an authoritative analyst voice in favor of a "Social Investing Revolution" allowing users to view the real-time performance of community members with similar profiles. During sign-up, users fill in their investment style, growth goals, history, and education level among other questions. They still build their own networks by adding family and friends, and can create account preferences like an automated stock watchlist.… Read more

Mystery watch auctioned for $566,000

It never fails. Everytime we vow not to get sucked into another mystery marketing campaign, we end up giving in. We're not sure if it's sheer nosiness or plain stupidity--probably both.

Just as we were drawn against our will to Lenovo's secretive "Reserve Edition" ThinkPad site and B&O's "Serenata" countdown page, we're now hooked on an ultra-exclusive watch appropriately called the "Incognito 2008." Still only a concept that won't be delivered until next year, the watch nevertheless appeared at an auction in Monaco where the bidding … Read more

Shrinking the multimedia phone watch

Talk about cruel irony. Just as some companies are finally developing smart watches that perform a multitude of functions ranging from video to phone features, reports persist that people may be giving up on wristwatches altogether.

But if products like the "iMobile C1000" continue their rapid development, it could forestall the death of the wrist timepiece indefinitely. This multimedia watch phone claims to be much less bulky than other models while still offering video, audio and Bluetooth, as well as a 1.5-inch color touch screen, according to Newlaunches. Before it can take the world by storm, however, … Read more

A wristwatch for DJ Tom Thumb

Puma sweats? Check. Adidas shell toes? Check. Kangol? Check. But you still need a watch to keep yourself on point and on time.

The Stamps Disco record turntable watch is a perfect fit for b-boys and vinyl aficionados, offering a miniature turntable as its face. You can also swap in a disco-ball-themed faceplate, but the turntable looks doper.

The $55 watch is available online through Urban Outfitters.

In a perfect world, the watch would actually play miniature records, but unfortunately, the face is just for show. But what a sweet show it is.

Tell time in Morse code

We always suspected that Tokyoflash was run by a bunch of sadists who intentionally create watches that are impossible for us to read. And now our theory has been confirmed: Doing away with any pretense, they've come up with one that requires a secret code to use.

The "Morse Code Watch" has three ways of displaying the time, two of which probably require an advanced degree or training in the intelligence community. Most maddening of all is its audible function, which conveys the time in a series of Morse code beeps from a built-in speaker.

There is, … Read more

Listening to Luxury: What does a $350,000 stereo sound like?

The very best high-end systems don't have a sound per se, they sound like the music they're playing. That's the goal at least, and the $350,000 system I heard at Bill Parish's GTT Audio & Video shop in Long Valley, New Jersey, was one of the best ultra high-end systems I've heard. And I've heard a lot.

The wild looking MBL 101E Radialstrahler Reference speakers ($49,900/pair) employ utterly unique woofer, midrange, and tweeter technology to radiate sound with perfect, 360 degree dispersion. Sounds technical, but trust me you don't have … Read more

A watch phone that actually looks decent

With the exception of the iPod lookalike from SMS Technology, most of the Dick Tracy watches and other wrist-mounted combo devices have left something to be desired in where appearances were concerned. That's clearly not a good thing, given that watches are marketed as fashion accessories or fine jewelry.

The "CECT W100 Wrist Watch" is a notable exception, despite its decidedly uninspired name. The Bluetooth watch phone, from China's Qiao Xing Mobile Communication, features an LCD touch screen, 1GB of memory, an FM radio and a 1.3-megapixel camera, according to SlipperyBrick. (Don't ask us … Read more

GPS wrist unit for bodybuilders

Purists who don't go for such combo gadgets as GPS mice might want to go in the opposite direction with an old-fashioned device that concentrates on just one function. Yes, they do still exist.

And where GPS is concerned, perhaps something like the Mainnav MW-705 is in order, as it's a dedicated receiver built into the form of a watch. Unfortunately, as OhGizmo notes, the unit is so clunky that it would be hard to make it through a doorway without turning sideways.

The Bluetooth GPS watch can work with other devices, such as smart phones and laptops, … Read more
