The innovative travel search service Hipmunk is ringing in the new year by adding powerful hotel search capability to its mobile apps.

While hotel search has been available on Hipmunk's Web site for quite some time, users of the native Android and iOS apps are only getting the function starting today.

Apple lists quad-core chip in iOS 5.1 beta, report says

The iPad and iPhone are going quad-core, according to a report citing references in the latest iOS beta.

9to5Mac said it has evidence that Apple will bump up future iPhones (iPhone 5?) and iPads (iPad 3?) to quad-core processing. The A5 chip used in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S is dual-core.

"While not quite confirming that a quad-core processor will power Apple's third-generation iPad, we have obtained evidence that suggests Apple is currently working on quad-core iOS devices," 9to5Mac said Friday.

iPhone users downloading more than 5 million free apps a day

iPhone users have been grabbing free apps at a feverish pace, says a new study from mobile ad firm Fiksu.

For the month of November, the total number of downloads of the top 200 free iPhone apps in the U.S. hit a record 5.65 million per day. That figure was 15 percent higher than the 4.91 million seen in October and a full 83 percent higher than the rate recorded a year ago.

November also was the first time that Fiksu's numbers surpassed the 5 million mark.

Untethered iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak makes it into the wild

It's been a busy week in the realm of iPhone hackery. Earlier today there was the release of an unofficial port of Siri for older iPhones, and now that's joined by an untethered jailbreak for users on Apple's iOS 5.0.1.

Apple has publicly released two updates today, one a tweaked version of iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone 4S users and the other an update to Apple TV, now version 4.4.4.

Apple's second beta of iOS 5.1 launched yesterday with several new fixes and features, but no clue yet as to whether it's squashed the battery drain bug.

Available for registered developers, iOS 5.1 beta 2 addresses a variety of issues, according to Boy Genius Report.
