Phones you can smell as well as hear

As Apple made clear with the iPhone last week, touch screens are the next evolutionary step in the development of mobile handsets. But Sony Ericsson is going after another one of the human senses: smell.

The company is making a line of aroma phones for Japan's NTT DoCoMo, according to Reuters, "to relax the users while making calls." (So Japanese in so many ways.) The handsets come with your choice of nine "scented sheets" accompanied by different designs.

Why, one might ask, would anyone want a scented phone? Perhaps it has something to do with … Read more

Sony Ericsson's low-key Z310

Sony Ericsson is taking a cue from Kyocera this CES by keeping things simple. Besides its low-end W200i Walkman phone, the company is showing its Z310, which it introduced last month. Bearing a very basic flip phone design with a small external display that disappears when the backlighting is off, the Z310 almost appears to be a Samsung phone from afar. It's available in black, bronze, and pink, and because no carrier has been announced, it will run you a steep $219.

Features are mostly midrange, with a 65,536-color internal display, a VGA camera, text and multimedia messaging, … Read more

Sony Ericsson's low-end Walkman phone

Sony Ericsson's Walkman line has always been great but also relatively expensive. Except for a couple like the W810i and the W600i, most Walkman phones never make it to a U.S. carrier, and as such never enjoy carrier subsidies. But at CES this year, Samsung shook things up a bit with the introduction of the Sony Ericsson W200i Walkman. Even without a carrier it will cost just $179, and with a carrier it will dip low as $79. Though Sony Ericsson wouldn't confirm if a carrier is imminent, we wouldn't be surprised if this phone ended … Read more

Sony Ericsson does color inside and out

The latest phone from Sony Ericsson may not be gold, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. (In fact, it's a good thing, in our opinion.)

The "Z310" clamshell does have a "mirror finish," but it's still more tastefully designed than so-called luxury phones we've seen recently--and even though pricing isn't yet known, we'll go out on a limb and guess that it'll cost considerably less. Its asthetic sensibilities continue inside, according to I4U News, as the phone includes "lighting effects" that allow you to color-code and … Read more

Sony puts TV on Symbian too

Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right?

Then Sling Media should be pink with pride today. The same day the Slingbox maker announced its video place-shifting technology would be available on mobile phones running Symbian OS, Sony announced that it too would make its LocationFree TV software available for download to a Symbian-based phone, the SonyEricsson P990 smart phone.

It's not immediately clear in what countries this will be available, or when the downloading can begin. A visit to the Sony support site says the software is "coming soon."
