Multifeatured text editor

Text Master is a basic text editor that offers a few more features than similar programs like Microsoft's Notepad. Although Text Master is not a full-fledged word processor, it's a nice, slightly more powerful alternative to other text editors.

Like most programs of this type, the interface is plain and fairly sparse, with a couple rows of small buttons across the top representing its major features. Not all of these were easily recognizable, so we were grateful for mouse-over tool tips. For the most part, the program was easy to use, at least when it came to its … Read more

Another addictive game from PopCap

We have yet to meet a game from PopCap that we didn't like, and Plants vs. Zombies is no exception. The premise doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but we don't care; like most other games from this publisher, it's addictively fun.

The game contains the same high-quality graphics we've come to expect from PopCap. The object of the game is to protect your house from a zombie invasion using a variety of plants in your front yard. Each of the plants needs a certain amount of sunshine (or points) for you to be … Read more

Intuitive flight tracker

Flightmap is a fun and useful program that allows users to track the details of their flights. From the frequent business traveler to the sightseeing hobbyist, Flightmap offers tools that are both utilitarian and enjoyable (in a slightly nerdy way).

The program's interface is sleek and intuitive, clearly modeled after Office 2007 products. The program's main features are arranged in well-organized tabs. To get started, users enter flight information, which includes not only the departure and arrival cities but the date, airline, aircraft, flight number, class (including crew or other nonrevenue), and whether the flight counts toward reward … Read more

Google Maps Navigation arrives for Android 1.6

One of the highlights of Android 2.0 has been the Google Maps Navigation app that delivers voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation on your phone for free. Until now, only Motorola Droid owners could take advantage of this sweet perk, but times they are a-changing.

On Monday, Google announced that its navigation app is now available for devices running Android 1.6 and higher, including the T-Mobile G1 and T-Mobile MyTouch 3G. While still in beta, the app provides voice-guided directions between two points, traffic information, and business searches.

This release also includes a new Layers feature that lets you overlay more … Read more

For a silver screen near you

This heavily redacted version of Movies, one of the first movie apps available for iPhone and iPod Touch, displays titles, tickets, and showtimes for current and upcoming movies and DVDs, populated by Flixster. A much improved interface and better media integration lets you tap any entry to view a host of information and listings times. Flixster's movie app downloads previews, displays reviews (and lets you add your own), and even lets you buy tickets from the app. Video preview quality is fair-to-decent (you can improve it in the Settings,) but attempting to download the preview without 3G or Wi-Fi … Read more

Quick Take: Panasonic TC-PC1 series

Panasonic's TC-PC1 series is available in two screen sizes: the 42-inch TC-P42C1 and the 50-inch TC-P50C1.

While CNET has not reviewed the Panasonic TC-PC1 series, we have reviewed the company's slightly more expensive TC-PX1 series. The two series of 720p plasma HDTVs are very similar similar aside from a few key differences. The X1 series has a higher native contrast ratio spec (30,000:1 vs. 15,000:1) so we expect it to exhibit slightly better black levels than the C1. The X1 also has an additional HDMI input (for a total of three, while the C1 … Read more

Quick Take: Panasonic TC-PU1 series

Panasonic's TC-PU1 series is available in three screen sizes: the 42-inch TC-P42U1, the 46-inch TC-P46U1, and the 50-inch TC-P50U1.

While CNET has not reviewed the Panasonic TC-PU1 series, we have reviewed the company's slightly more-expensive TC-PS1 series. The two series of 1080p plasma HDTVs are very similar similar aside from a few key differences. The S1 series has a higher native contrast ratio spec (40,000:1 vs. 30,000:1) and an antireflective coating on the screen, so we expect it to exhibit slightly better black levels and bright-room performance than the U1. The S1 also has … Read more

Like a rock

Don't expect Firebox to pamper you with frilly icons and pretty formats. It's just not that kind of digital vault. Ask for nothing other than a master password, a straightforward format, and encryption from Firebox, and you'll get along fine. The lock box gives you a few data categories and samples to get started, like entries for your computer log-in and Web site details. You can also start it up with a blank database and build your own entries from scratch. Searching and sorting your database is also in the cards. Web URLs now trigger Safari to … Read more
