In order to get back on top of the video games market, Electronic Arts is willing to pay a hefty price. Namely, $860 million.
The Redwood City, Calif.-based publisher announced on Thursday afternoon that it had agreed to acquire VG Holdings, the parent company of two game development companies, BioWare and Pandemic Studios, from private equity firm Elevation Partners.
This deal, expected to close in January and originally reported by the Wall Street Journal, is the largest in EA's 25-year history.

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli says the company's vision for Crysis has always been to create the most stunning, immersive first-person-shooter experience ever. And from our early looks at the game, it appears Crysis will be just that. However, we also assumed that to play the game in its full glory you'd need a super high-end PC. How high-end? Well, The Escapist is reporting that Crytek and Electronic Arts, the publisher of the game, have announced the minimum and recommend system requirements for the game, which hits stores November 16.
EA Games held a preview event last night in Manhattan, showing off the company's latest big-name games, from The Simpsons Game to Half-Life 2: Orange Box. While most of the action took place on the various screens around the room, my eyes were drawn to a large, funky-shaped piece of white plastic at the Metal of Honor Heroes 2 display. They had an actual Wii Zapper set up to demonstrate the game's on-rails shooter-style Arcade mode. I couldn't resist the chance to try Nintendo's new Wii peripheral, not scheduled to hit stores until November.

Apple's online store is now taking orders for the four games from Electronic Arts that were promised for July, and they'll soon be available in retail as well.
The four titles--Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Need for Speed Carbon, Battlefield 2142 and Command and Conquer 3--are the first EA games that the company has published for Mac OS X, EA said in a press release. In the past, EA has only released Windows versions of its popular games that other companies had to port over to the Mac.
But Bing Gordon, chief creative officer for … Read more
Editors' note: This blog initially misstated Bing Gordon's title. He is chief creative officer of Electronic Arts.
A new football season is around the corner, and gamers have a new version of Electronic Arts' running hit Madden NFL 08 to prepare for their fantasy drafts. That is, PC and console gamers.
EA Chief Creative Officer Bing Gordon said at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June that the company would simultaneously release Madden NFL 08 for both Windows PCs and Macs when the title went on sale last night. However, as noted by VNUnet, the Mac version is nowhere … Read more
By now, the news has hit the wires (and the blogs) that Peter Moore, corporate vice president of interactive entertainment at Microsoft, is leaving Redmond to be president of the sports division at game publisher Electronic Arts (EA). An EA representative confirmed to CNET News.com that there is no press conference planned, but a release (now posted on Kotaku, which first reported the news) has been sent out.
One of the most buzzed-about games of E3 this year is Rock Band, EA's answer to Activision's popular Guitar Hero franchise. Instead of playing along to onscreen songs with one or two plastic guitar-shaped controllers as in Guitar Hero, Rock Band adds a drum kit and microphone to the mix, letting up to four rockers do their thing at one time.
The guitars are similar to the plastic Guitar Hero axes you're familiar with, and the mic is a standard plastic number you might find on a cheap karaoke machine. The drum kit is clearly the main … Read more
Television's longest-running TV family and longest-running animated series is getting yet another game with The Simpsons Game. It's not a direct tie-in with the upcoming Simpsons movie, but it still puts you in the shoes of Homer, Bart, Lisa, and Marge as they fight and bite and fight and bite and fight through 16 different cartoon-realistic, cel-shaded "episodes." The Simpsons Game hits every major video game console this fall.
The WWII shooter genre is about as overworked as a game meme can be, with virtually identical games having suspiciously similar names, such as Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, or Hour of Victory. The Medal of Honor series, which dates all the way back the original PlayStation, breaks away from the pack with a surprisingly refreshing take on the theme.
Instead of planting you, as a well-armed soldier, at point A in some generic European town and forcing you to fight through waves of Axis soldiers on your way to point B, MoH: Airborne sets up the map, shows … Read more
