Palm CEO talks up 'Nova,' his 2009 operating system

Palm CEO Ed Colligan says the company's long-awaited operating system of the future will center around the Internet, and be distinct from the familiar Palm OS that's currently available.

Palm has been somewhat tight-lipped about the future of its operating system development, but Colligan gave an interview to APC in which he described the "Nova" OS as a "next-generation operating system with much more capabilities, driven around the Internet and Web-based applications." Nova will be based on a Linux core and is scheduled to arrive next year.

The idea is to return to what … Read more

Pics of Palm Treo 850 surface: Not too shabby

Just recently, we reported on some rumors about a Palm Treo 800, a CDMA smartphone with Windows Mobile 6.1, EV-DO Rev. A, and GPS. While the feature list was pretty impressive, the picture of the reported device didn't excite us very much. In fact, it was downright dullsville and forgettable. However, today, the Boy Genius Report has some images of another new Treo, the Palm Treo 850, and this time, it's got our attention.

If the pictures are to be believed, the device looks incredibly slick and slim, and there's even a comparison shot of the … Read more

Palm opens its Virtual Developer Lab

It's one thing to bang out a quick third-party program for a single phone model, and quite another to develop a mobile application that works as predicted on a battalion of cell phone models, each with their own set of finely cultured specs.

For numerous reasons, developers may not have all those phones at the ready, and when it comes time for final testing, emulators that live on the screen and mimic device behavior just aren't good enough.

If you're Palm, a mobile platform and device manufacturer that's fighting for its slimmed-down market share, you'd … Read more

For the Palm faithful: Treo 800w rumors abound

For all the crap Palm gets about its lack of innovation, it's still got a pretty loyal fanbase so we imagine some of you will be interested in this tidbit. There are various stories around the blogosphere about a new Windows-based Treo, codenamed "Zeppelin" or otherwise known as the Palm Treo 800w. Among the various rumors, the CDMA smartphone is said to run Windows Mobile 6.1 with support for EV-DO Rev. A, GPS and/or Wi-Fi (varying reports on whether it has one or both radios), and a 320x320 touch screen. Some are saying the Treo … Read more

Sadly, some Palm apps are now free

Knowing that I still use a Palm Treo 650 (yes, people who review phones don't necessarily have fancy ones), a colleague alerted me to the fact that PDAmill Game Studios has made all its Palm OS games free. The company stopped making games for this platform since February 2007 but still has a reasonable stable of applications for Windows Mobile. Some of these games are quite good and may be worth a download for those still using a Palm OS device.

TreoCentral reported on this and noted a few other developers giving away their previously for-sale software. These include … Read more

Pleco may be bringing a full-featured Chinese dictionary to iPhone

The inventor of the increasingly ubiquitous Pleco Chinese-English dictionary software for Palm and Windows Mobile devices said the company is "very seriously considering developing" an iPhone version.

In an interview in April's China International Business (not yet online), Michael Love tells of developing the 6-year-old product and how it's getting popular enough that many foreigners in China are buying PDAs or PDA phones just to use Pleco.

I, for one, would not have bought my Windows Mobile-running HTC Touch if not for this program, and untold dozens of my Beijing friends and acquaintances are carrying around … Read more

All's pretty quiet in Palm's house for GSMA

There's a lot of Windows Mobile and Symbian news at GSMA Mobile World Congress, but things have been pretty quiet in Palm-land. Still, the company is here at the show, and there was a wee bit news. First, a GSM version of the Palm Centro will be coming to Europe. According to Treonauts, the unlocked Centro will be available in the United Kingdom on February 14, and at the end of the month for the rest of Europe with a price tag of 299 euros. A Web site called TamsWMS also has what appears to be the first unboxing … Read more

Palm closing retail stores, paying out Treo owners

Palm has decided to close its retail stores as it faces the effects of a class-action lawsuit filed by Treo owners.

Palm announced on Wednesday that Treo 600 and 650 owners who have had their units replaced or repaired at least twice are eligible for cash rebates on new Palm smartphones, as part of a settlement of a class-action suit filed in 2005. The company will also repair any Treo 600 or 650 that hasn't failed twice, but is outside of the original warranty.

Thursday brought news that the company's 34 stores--eight Palm-branded locations and 26 stores that … Read more
