LAS VEGAS -- Sleek, black, wraparound, OLED display. Sounds like a lot of other wearable devices here at CES 2014, but LG's first entry into wearable tech -- the Lifeband Touch -- seems okay with the familiar. Instead of going into the Samsung-style deep end of feature-studded wearables like the Galaxy Gear, the Lifeband feels practical…and very health-oriented. I got to play with it for a brief bit, and at least came away impressed at its build quality. But, what's also cool about the Lifeband Touch is its focus on working in phone notifications and even two-way … Read more
LAS VEGAS--Alcatel is teaming up with Canadian carriers Bell and Virgin to sell a pair of the company's Android smartphones.
First, there's the One Touch Idol X, a slim, bright, 5-inch 1080p Android phone we first saw at Mobile World Congress almost a full year ago.
Since then, the Idol X has gotten an Android upgrade to version 4.2, which lags two version behind, but will still deliver the meat of what Android does best. In addition, it's equipped with a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, a 13-megapixel camera, and a microSD slot (32GB) for people who … Read more
LAS VEGAS -- Alcatel is back with two new tablets coming to North America, but with no actual US release date. The One Touch Pop 7 and Pop 8 are both extremely modestly-spec'ed tablets that appear to focus on their LTE capability over performance. Neither price nor release date have yet been unveiled.
The One Touch Pop 7 is a 7-inch tablet with a 1,024x600 resolution TFT screen. It's not an IPS screen, and its viewing angles are painfully narrow as a result. The tablet houses a 1.3GHz dual-core CPU, a 2-megapixel rear camera, and a … Read more
LAS VEGAS-- On Monday, lesser-known smartphone maker Alcatel used CES to officially introduce the Alcatel One Touch Idol X+, its very first eight-core smartphone, and one of the world's first in this category as well.
Unlike Samsung's Exynos 5 processor, which the company unveiled at last year's CES, MediaTek's chipset runs all cores at once, a very different approach to battery management, but one that MediaTek promises will … Read more
LAS VEGAS -- Alcatel may sell the gray version of its 4.7-inch OneTouch Idol Alpha smartphone globally, but CES 2014 was the first time this brand-new gold shade strutted its stuff.
Perhaps taking a cue from Apple's subtle champagne iPhone 5S, Alcatel's new Idol Alpha in a similarly pale gold turns out to be a pretty piece of hardware.
Adding to the eye candy are two transparent strips that line the top and bottom. LED lights shine on the navigation icons for Home, Back, and the Menu. Don't let this fool you; the touchpad is actually … Read more
LG Lifeband Touch. pic.twitter.com/ixWxxVsYsf— @evleaks (@evleaks) December 31, 2013
Avid leaker @evleaks is at it again. And this time, the Twitter user has turned an eye to LG.
@evleaks on Tuesday posted an image of what it claims is the LG Lifeband Touch. The tweet didn't include any more information on the Lifeband Touch, but it appears to be a wearable fitness tracker users can place around their wrists. There's also a green circle at the top of the device, which may justify the use of the "touch" branding.
LG has been rumored … Read more
While song identification software is nothing new, Shazam's new update for iPhone and iPod Touch seems to be stepping up the game.
Dubbed "Auto Shazam," the app's new feature, which debuted on Thursday, is able to continuously recognize popular music and TV around a user even though their phone may be locked. This means if someone is unable to whip out their phone to Shazam a song, the phone will still be able to record it.
"Flip the switch on the Shazam home screen to turn on Auto Shazam, and automatically recognize while you commute … Read more
TouchPad Calculator carves through multiple math problems at once, giving you a better way to handle a given set of numbers. It lets you edit any part of a complicated problem thanks to its useful list view. While it may not have as many advanced features as handheld calculators made for mathletes, it should be more than enough for most people.
Instead of giving you the traditional narrow screen of a regular calculator, this application maps out every operation you give it on a handy list. That makes it easy to change a single element of a longer problem without … Read more
There are finally universal game controllers that work with Lightning-equipped iPhones and iPods running iOS 7. Both the Moga Ace Power and Logitech PowerShell offer the potential to turn your device into a little handheld game dynamo by adding buttons. But, there's a problem: it's not easy to find games that support them.
There are supposed to be hundreds of iOS 7 controller-ready games out there in the App Store, but with 1 million apps to sift through, discovery isn't a piece of cake. Games need to be updated to work with these controllers. Luckily, many of the newer games are coming out of the gate controller-ready, and Rockstar's newly released Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the king of the early heap. … Read more
