AT&T's HTC Titan II produces LTE, 16-megapixel camera whopper

LAS VEGAS--Listen up, you LTE lovers across America. The HTC Titan is getting a faster brother.

The cleverly named HTC Titan II, announced this morning at AT&T's CES press conference, is almost identical to the Windows Phone handset we got in November, but with two major new features.

The first is support for AT&T's growing 4G LTE network. The second is a rear-facing camera capable of capturing a whopping 16 megapixels, double what we're seeing on most high-end camera phones out there right now.

Beyond that, there's still the same hulking build (5.2 inches by 2.7 inches by 0.4 inches), 4.7-inch WVGA Super-LCD screen, and Windows Phone 7.5 Mango operating system.… Read more

Why Nvidia's chips can power supercomputers

Nvidia chips are now in three of the five fastest supercomputers in the world. How did Nvidia get there so fast?

I spoke with Steve Scott, chief technology officer at Nvidia's Tesla products group, to find out.

First, a quick primer on Tesla and graphics chip-based supercomputing. Tesla processors are basically graphics processing units (GPUs) that have been redesigned for supercomputers. The results are impressive enough that some of the most important supercomputing sites have signed on. The U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, probably the premier U.S. supercomputing site, will use Tesla processors in its next supercomputer,… Read more

HTC Titan, HTC Radar on video from CTIA

Our own Bonnie Cha had the chance to look over the HTC Titan and the HTC Radar a few months ago, but it wasn't until CTIA in San Diego that we had a chance to get proper First Look videos of them both.

Well, now here they are! Check them out to see if these Windows Phones are to your taste.

iPhone 4S vs. the competition

There was a lot of anticipation leading up to today's Apple iPhone 4S announcement, so much so that it practically took down the Internet. Whether you were happy with or disappointed by today's news, the fact is, the 4S is Apple's next iPhone, so what does this mean for you and for the competition?

If you're a current iPhone 4 user, there's certainly a question of whether there's enough there to make it worth an upgrade. However, for those looking for their first smartphone or those simply looking to ditch their current handset, the … Read more

How HTC's new Windows Mango phones stack up

Ever since Microsoft took the wraps off of Windows Phone 7.5 (code-named Mango), we've been wondering how phone-makers would update the first crop of phones to carry the new operating system.

HTC gave us its answer with the announcements of the HTC Titan and HTC Radar, both available in Europe starting in October.

Both handsets bring hardware improvements in the form of a slightly faster processor and higher megapixel camera for the Titan, and a front-facing camera apiece (1.3-megapixel and VGA, respectively).… Read more

CES: Verbatim Titan XS: Superportable USB 3.0 external drive

LAS VEGAS--Just a day after Seagate announced what's arguably the most compact portable hard drive, the GoFlex Slim, the record is now broken by what Verbatim announced today, the Titan XS SuperSpeed USB 3.0.

While it's hard to put in numbers how much smaller the Titan XS is, I've seen them both and it is indeed smaller--though admittedly not by much.

The Titan XS is a rugged portable drive, though not nearly as rugged as the ioSafe Rugged Portable. Like the name suggests, it supports SuperSpeed USB 3.0 (5Gbps) and is housed in a shock-resistant … Read more

Would e-mail transform Facebook, or vice versa?

Facebook has overcome plenty of challenges and defied plenty of detractors in its ascent to Internet power. It looks likely to take on a new set of both Monday with an expected new e-mail service.

ZDNet blogger Mary Jo Foley published word of the expected Facebook e-mail service yesterday, along with the possibility that Facebook will integrate it with Microsoft's online Office tools. And today, TechCrunch also said Facebook will unveil its e-mail service, called Titan. Facebook's invitation, styled like an air mail envelope, suggests there's truth to the reports.

E-mail is in many ways a natural … Read more
