Siemens aims to be in top 3 in wind power by 2012

German conglomerate Siemens, the world's market leader in offshore wind turbines, is aiming to become one of the top three suppliers to the wind power market by 2012, the head of its Wind Power unit said.

"The global wind power market will grow from about 30 billion euros ($44.43 billion) annually today to more than 200 billion euros by 2030. We anticipate especially robust growth in the Asia-Pacific region," Siemens Wind Power CEO Andreas Nauen told reporters Wednesday.

Ciena buys Nortel's Metro Ethernet business

Telecommunications equipment maker Ciena won an auction to acquire a division of Nortel Networks that develops equipment for transmitting data and voice traffic for about $769 million in cash and stock.

Ciena outbid Nokia Siemens Networks, a joint venture between Nokia of Finland and Siemens of Germany. The auction, which started Friday, was part of Nortel's bankruptcy proceedings, and its goal was to sell Nortel's Metro Ethernet division.

Nokia Siemens eyeing cost cuts, layoffs

Damaged by lower sales, huge operating losses, and a falling market share, Nokia Siemens Networks is pinning its hopes on a major reorganization.

The network equipment maker, jointly owned by Nokia and Siemens, announced Tuesday that it will lay off 5,700 employees and cut its five business units to three as part of a plan to slash expenses by 500 million euros ($740 million) by the end of 2011.

Nokia hit by $832 million loss in third quarter

Nokia on Thursday reported a loss for its third quarter of 559 million euros ($832 million) compared with a profit of 1.09 billion euros in the same quarter of 2008.

The net loss for the period that ended September 30 was triggered by declining sales, which fell 20 percent to 9.18 billion euros from 12.2 billion euros the prior year's quarter. A write-down of the company's weak Nokia Siemens Networks unit also put a big drag on the bottom line.

First floating wind turbine buoyed off Norway

Development of offshore wind farms has been restricted to places where turbines can be attached to the sea bed.

But earlier this week, Siemens and energy company StatoilHydro installed what they call the first large-scale floating turbine. The installation is off the coast of Norway, and testing is expected to last for two years.

The Hywind turbine will still have a ballast that is tied to the sea floor with cables. Wires will transfer the electricity produced to the mainland grid starting in July.

Hybrid ship ahoy: Valence to supply Siemens

Lithium ion battery company Valence plans to supply batteries to Siemens for hybrid ships and to Chicago utility S&C Electric for grid storage.

Its deal with Siemens Drive Technologies calls for Valence to develop energy storage for a planned hybrid marine propulsion system from Siemens. Valence will hook up its lithium iron magnesium phosphate batteries to Siemens' drive system via a standard interface, the company said.

The two companies have already supplied a hybrid drive train for double-decker buses from Wrightbus.

Server sales drop 25 percent worldwide

Worldwide server sales suffered a 25 percent drop in the first quarter, hitting their lowest level in at least 12 years, according to a new report from market tracker IDC.

The report, released Thursday, recorded first-quarter factory server sales at $9.9 billion, a drop of exactly 24.5 percent over the same period a year ago--and the lowest level since IDC began covering the market a dozen years ago.

The number of servers shipped fell 26.5 percent from the year-ago quarter, the smallest quarterly figure in the last five years.
