When Apple announced that the iPhone 5S was going to come with the ability to capture slow-motion video, I was excited. Slowing down films of my kids has always been something I enjoyed doing, but I had to use various third-party apps or import the clips into iMovie in order to accomplish it. Now, with the iPhone 5S I have a native option to capture, edit and share slo-mo videos. And if you're lucky enough to have found a 5S in stock somewhere, you have the ability to create slo-mo videos with you at all times. Check out these five fun clips … Read more
When you create a user account in OS X, the system will create default share points for the account, so if you enable file sharing you can access your data with little additional effort, if any. Most of these shared locations, such as the home folder, are specific for the user itself; however, in addition to these the system will make the user's Public folder and its enclosed "Drop Box" folder more openly available to other users on the system.
While access to these folders is limited to the users on the system by default, if you … Read more
From features to speed, mobile browsing isn't quite what its desktop sibling is, but if Tuesday's Firefox 24 update is any indication, the gap between them is quickly shrinking.
The new, stable version of Firefox 24 for Android focuses on tying the mobile browser to several quick sharing tools.
Among the list of options in the Android menu button while using Firefox is now a "quickshare" button, based on your most commonly-used sharing tools. It lets you share with one tap and automatically picks up on your preferred sharing tools.
"Bump sharing" will also … Read more
Ephemeral messaging app Snapchat is now on equal footing with Facebook in the photo-sharing department. The app currently sees 350 million "snaps" sent per day, Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel said Monday.
Spiegel announced the new figure, up from 200 million snaps in June, during an interview at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco. The snap, the essence of the mobile app for iOS and Android, is a photo or video message users send to friends that disappears after a few seconds.
Because a snap can be likened to a photo share, one could argue that the 2-year-old … Read more
China's government on Monday made one thing clear to its citizens: spreading rumors online won't be tolerated.
The country's top court on Monday interpreted a law on how the spread of so-called "online rumors" should be handled by China's lawmakers. According to Reuters, which obtained a copy of that interpretation, if a particular rumor is posted to a Web page that has 5,000 or more visits or is reported on social-networking sites more than 500 times, the person publishing the rumor could face up to three years in jail.

Facebook spent $1 billion to acquire Instagram in 2012 and is apparently ready to see a return on its investment.
Although no ads currently appear on the photo-sharing site, Instagram's new chief operating officer expects the site to be ready to begin selling ads within a year.
"We want to make money in the long term, but we don't have any short-term pressure," White told The Wall Street Journal.
EasyShareCam gives easy access to all of your sharing options by adding them directly below every photo you take. It might seem like a small change, but it can actually greatly streamline the process of taking and sharing images with your friends and family on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by e-mail.
There is not a lot to this app. You load it up, and can choose to either take a photo or load one from your photo album. A horizontal menu then pops up at the bottom of the screen, listing all of your system sharing options -- including Facebook, … Read more
The two firms use different methodology to measure browser usage -- for example, StatCounter measures all page views to its network of Web sites while Net Applications only counts one per day to try to measure users more than usage. As a result, StatCounter names Google's 5-year-old Chrome as the top browser, but Net Applications gives the honor to IE.
For August, though, IE looked better off in both … Read more
Apple has bigger designs on the biggest smartphone market in the world.
New iPhones could help Apple catch up with Samsung in China -- Samsung is now the single largest smartphone player in that market -- if two likely scenarios happen.
First, Apple announces a lower-cost iPhone, rumored to be the 5C. That would provide a better match for China's price-sensitive consumers.
Second, Apple cuts a deal with China Mobile, the biggest carrier in the largest smartphone market in the world.
Apple's growth in China has been stunted, in part, because it hasn't been able to strike … Read more
