Review: Alpine PND-K3

Alpine continues its foray into the personal navigation market with the PND-K3, following up on its previous Blackbird models. CNET's Bonnie Cha reviews the PND-K3 and finds a big improvement over those previous efforts. Top features include text-to-speech and lane guidance, and the new model has a nice interface. But the device comes out of the gate with a high list price, and Bonnie wasn't too impressed with the battery life.

PND-K3 kicks off new look for Alpine's GPS line

Alpine Electronics has made a name for itself with its in-car audio/video and speaker solutions, but when it comes to portable navigation devices, the company has a little ways to go. However, it's hoping that will change with the new Alpine PND-K3.

The in-car GPS sports sleeker design than the company's previous PND, the Alpine BlackBird II, and features new map visuals and an updated user interface. The PND-K3 also comes preloaded with Navteq maps of the United States and Canada, text-to-speech functionality, and integrated Bluetooth for hands-free calling.

Samsung introduces ARM-based smartphone chip

Samsung Electronics introduced a new ARM-based processor for smartphones at Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona, Spain. The S3C6410 "mobile application processor" includes special hardware accelerators to handle motion video processing and 3D graphics, thereby freeing up the main processor for other tasks and speeding overall performance.

At the heart of the S3C6410 is an ARM1176 processor core that can be clocked up to 667MHz. The chip is made on Samsung's advanced 65-nanometer manufacturing process.
