'SNL' pits Assange against Zuckerberg

There are clearly far more similarities between WikiLeaks and Facebook than might first assail the average retina.

Indeed, when Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg was asked about the two organizations, during his acceptance interview for Time magazine's Person of the Year, he replied: "Well, at a very high level some of the themes could be connected. I mean we mostly make so you can understand what's going on with the people around you because we think that that helps you connect with them more broadly."

So how could "Saturday Night Live" not examine the contrast … Read more

The 404 704: Where having kids only makes you hotter (podcast)

Whether it's the dude showing off his abs or a co-worker inviting you to happy hour drinks at Dave and Busters, we all have friends on Facebook we wouldn't mind disappearing. Wave bye to these faux friends, because November 17 is National UnFriend Day, where everyone is invited to trim the friend fat...on Facebook, that is.

The creator of the new holiday is late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who recently declared war on all Facebook friends you don't actually care about in "real life." Genuine friendships are sacred, according to Kimmel, and he thinks social networks like Facebook that let you "friend" anyone are cheapening the sentiment.

On the other hand, if you're curious to know who's unfriended YOU on Facebook, well...there's an app for that. It's called UnFriend Finder, and it's a new extension for the Firefox Web browser that tells you which of your friends are being unfaithful and exactly when the online break-up occurred. Just be sure to install it prior to November 17, because it won't retroactively show you ex-friends from the past.

Hopefully Natali Del Conte won't unfriend The 404, or else we wouldn't have opportunities like today to invite her on the show to tell us more technical details than we ever thought existed about diapers, including her 30-day cloth diaper challenge...don't feel left out if you don't have a kid, we're planning a similar diaper competition among ourselves.

After the break and a video voice mail from Kentucky From Neil, we want to warn all of our male listeners using laptops about scrotal hyperthermia. According to an experimental study on 29 healthy male volunteers, varying the position of a laptop won't help the issue, although the conclusion does recommend a laptop pad and/or adjusting your seating stance to prevent long-term damage. Safety first on The 404!

The 404 675: Where we watch Katy Perry on COED Magazine (podcast)

COED Magazine produces sexy (but SFW!) content that makes a perfect match for CNET's The 404 Podcast, so we're excited to have Editor-in-Chief Stephen Gebhardt in the guest chair today to chat about the genesis of COED Mag, a scourge of suggestive Katy Perry GIFs, 15 signs you're an Internet weirdo, and "Back to the Future" returning to movie theaters! As you might've guessed, Wilson spends the entire episode shaking his head and fielding calls from the FCC.

COED Magazine is a comprehensive Web publication that caters to a lot of different interests like MMA, sports, tech news, and media, but you can guess the main focus of a Web site with "COED" in the name (queue Wilson scrambling to remove screenshots from the video recording).

Stephen tells us that Katy Perry is driving a ton of traffic to the site, thanks to her appearance on SNL and her cleavage-filled appearance on "Sesame Street." To cash in on her fame, COED presents the 15 most suggestive Katy Perry animated GIFs. If you're like us, these are sure to end your workday productivity, so don't say we didn't warn you.

We also enjoyed this article on the 15 signs you're an Internet weirdo, but mostly because almost all of them apply to The 404 in one host or another. For example, #10: You can't go five minutes without checking your e-mail obviously applies to Wilson, while #1 You play games more hours per week than you work at an actual job sounds like Jeff, and me? Well, it might be easier to read the list and guess which don't sound like something I'd do in the privacy of my own browser.

There's plenty more fun on today's episode with Stephen Gebhardt, including a list of 10 movies about video games that don't suck and some news about "Back to the Future," so enjoy the episode and follow along at COED Magazine!

Touring the Minefield: Firefox nightlies hands-on

Browser development can be a risky place, even for a team of savvy, crowd-sourced enthusiasts. So it's no surprise that Mozilla calls their nightly Firefox build "Minefield." What is surprising is that, in general, today's version tended to be fairly stable.

The version I spent the day with, Firefox 3.7 alpha 6, offers multiple in-development improvements. Besides being built on the next version of Firefox's rendering engine Gecko, the current nightlies will eventually become Firefox 4, expected to be released later this year.

For right now, though, the nightly builds are a rough work … Read more

New Toughbook 31: Perfect for multitasking in a sandstorm

If you're in the military or working in rough field conditions and need a computer upgrade, you're in luck: Panasonic has just announced the upgraded Toughbook 31, a new successor to its most-rugged Toughbook line.

With a weight and thickness that would be unappealing to anyone but those who need serious environmental armor, the Toughbook 31 comes with either an Intel Core i3 or i5 processor, optional ATI HD 5630 graphics, and up to a claimed 11 hours of battery life.

A 13.3-inch LED-backlit touch-screen display has CircuLumin technology that Panasonic says will enable viewing of the … Read more

Xbox stolen from gold medal bobsledder

It's been pretty much one great thing after another for Steven Holcomb since winning the bobsled gold at the Vancouver Olympics. Well, at least until this week.

Holcomb, who is a big-time computer nerd and video gamer, discovered that his prized Xbox 360 and games had been stolen out of his car. And while the $4,000 worth of gear and games has him a little queasy, what really makes him sick are the hundreds of hours of saved games that he had on the console.

"It's like a death in the family," Holcomb said in … Read more

Holcomb, 'Night Train' team collect bobsled gold

WHISTLER, B.C.--Steve Holcomb stood proud as he and his bobsled team were honored with the Americans' first gold medal in that sport in 62 years.

Then, offstage, he did his now famous Holcy dance. Unfortunately, CBS doesn't have broadcast rights, so I can't show you that. But I will put a YouTube video at the bottom so you can get the idea.

In an interview, Holcomb told me that he's done a lot of crazy things in his life, but said, "this is a better high than anything." The huge adrenaline rush makes … Read more

Geek bobsledder leads after day 1

WHISTLER, B.C.--American bobsled pilot Steven Holcomb, a master of sport and computers, put his four-man bobsled in strong position to win gold in Vancouver.

After two of four runs, Holcomb's USA-1 team leads by 0.4 seconds over Canada-1 and 0.44 seconds over bobsled legend Andre Lange, who is trying to be the first man to twice win the two-man and four-man events at the same Olympics.

Holcomb, who is a computer science major and Microsoft Certified Professional, has the U.S. two runs away from ending a 62-year gold medal drought in bobsled.

After the … Read more

Can IT guy deliver bobsled gold?

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--It's been 62 years since the United States claimed a gold medal in bobsled.

And this year, our best hope is piloted by a computer geek who trains by playing video games.

So our chances are pretty good. That's because, in addition to being a Microsoft Certified Professional and admitted PC nerd, Stephen Holcomb is also the reigning world champion in the four-man bobsled.

Plus, he's got this crazy "Holcy dance" that one just has to see to believe.

Holcomb hopes to dance his way on to the medal podium by the time … Read more

Upcoming Octovo Kindle light shines

One of the most noted downsides of the Kindle and other E-ink based e-readers is that they don't have a backlight for reading in darkened environments. Sure, you can just turn on a light, but things get problematic when you want to read in bed while a significant--or not so significant--other sleeps.

We got our hands on an earlier sample of Octovo's new $29.99 Kindle light, which is sleeker than most book lights we've encountered and also offers nice uniform illumination for your Kindle. Compared to M-Edge's popular e-Luminator2 ($25), which slips into a variety … Read more
