The Pre's Battery Life

I didn't want to comment on the Pre's battery lift until I'd tried it out for a full week. Well, the week is up and here goes...

While the battery in my Palm Pre lasts all day with little to moderate usage, it runs down very quickly.

An example would be Independence Day when I took about 40 pictures at our town's parade and then proceeded to upload about a dozen of them via email to Whrrl. In 2 hours I used about 80% of the battery life.

Today I read a very long email while … Read more

The Contact Transfer Workaround

If you read about my disappointment with the Pre's bluetooth capabilities, or lack thereof, then you'll know I've been frustrated with my contacts being on my Instinct and not my Pre.

Yesterday I did some looking around, (again) but couldn't find any cut and dry solutions. I figured tho, with both devices being smart phones I ought to be able to export from one and transfer to the other. Some how.

Here's what ended up working. … Read more

Palm Pre's Bluetooth = Fail

Licketysplit I got my Samsung Instinct and my Palm Pre paired up via bluetooth. Then I went to transfer contacts...

After trying over and over and checking every setting on each device I looked up the problem on the Palm Support Forums.

According to the forums...

To do this the Pre needs the OBEX bluetooth profile. Which at this time it does not. That does not mean it will not be added though. Its not a hardware issue, but software.

Apparently, the bluetooth on the Pre is only good for connecting to an audio device, such as a headset. No … Read more

Email Love

Setting up my main email accounts on the Palm Pre was a breeze. Gmail automatically signed in and pulled my settings. All I had to enter was my email address and my password. Next I tried a business email associated with a self hosted domain name. I couldn't believe it when that too pulled everything in automatically! I'm used to having to set up emails manually, entering SMTP, POP/IMAP settings, SSL, etc.

The email application on the Palm Pre feels like a real desktop email client. My Samsung Instinct's email client worked more like text messaging. Seriously, it didn't feel professional. The only thing the Instinct has that I miss with the Pre is the ability to select multiple emails to delete without ever opening them. … Read more

Becoming Attached

The Palm Pre is quickly becoming my lifeline. From posting to Twitter to checking my email, I'm doing more and more on the Pre. When I'm sitting outside enjoying the cool morning breeze I'm tackling my email inbox without having to drag out the laptop. While my kid is playing with the neighbor kids I'm conducting business just two feet away.

With all this technology at my fingertips, literally, I'm becoming more and more addicted to being connected. I can't decide if this is good or bad...

After unboxing the Pre I immediately installed … Read more

FBI's Net surveillance proposal raises privacy, legal concerns

The FBI director and a Republican congressman sketched out a far-reaching plan this week for warrantless surveillance of the Internet.

During a House of Representatives Judiciary Committee hearing, the FBI's Robert Mueller and Rep. Darrell Issa of California talked about what amounts to a two-step approach. Step 1 involves asking Internet service providers to open their networks to the FBI voluntarily; step 2 would be a federal law forcing companies to do just that.

Both have their problems, legal and practical, but let's look at step 1 first. Issa suggested that Internet providers could get "consent from … Read more

Transcript: FBI director on surveillance of 'illegal' Internet activity

When the FBI suggested that it should be able to perform wide-scale Internet monitoring to detect "illegal activity" on Wednesday, the bureau raised more questions than it answered.

To help clear things up, we're providing the transcript of FBI Director Robert Mueller's exchange at a House of Representatives hearing with Rep. Darrell Issa, a California Republican. Issa made his fortune by founding Directed Electronics, a publicly traded company that sells car alarms and home theater loudspeakers.

Issa also is a member of the House Intelligence Committee, which is holding a closed hearing on Thursday devoted to … Read more

FBI grilled again over computer upgrade woes

WASHINGTON--The FBI's legacy of botched computer upgrades is still haunting some politicians on Capitol Hill.

At a U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, former committee Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) grilled FBI Director Robert Mueller about what he deemed a "fiasco"--a failed case-management system overhaul known as Virtual Case File.

Sensenbrenner accused Mueller of "continuously frustrating" his committee's attempts to find out how much money had been spent before the failed program was abandoned about three years ago. The FBI has since begun a new effort called Sentinel, whose … Read more

FBI wants widespread monitoring of 'illegal' Internet activity

WASHINGTON--The FBI on Wednesday called for new legislation that would allow federal police to monitor the Internet for "illegal activity."

The suggestion from FBI Director Robert Mueller, which came during a House of Representatives Judiciary Committee hearing, appears to go beyond a current plan to monitor traffic on federal-government networks. Mueller seemed to suggest that the bureau should have a broad "omnibus" authority to conduct monitoring and surveillance of private-sector networks as well.

The surveillance should include all Internet traffic, Mueller said, "whether it be .mil, .gov, .com--whichever network you're talking about." (See … Read more

FBI, politicos renew push for ISP data retention laws

WASHINGTON--The FBI and multiple members of Congress said on Wednesday that Internet service providers must be legally required to keep records of their users' activities for later review by police.

Their suggestions for mandatory data retention revive a push for potentially sweeping federal laws--which civil libertarians oppose--that flagged last year after the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, the idea's most prominent proponent.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told a House of Representatives committee that Internet service providers should be required to keep records of users' activities for two years.

"From the perspective of an investigator, having that backlog … Read more
