iPad on the ceiling? RingO mounts it in a snap

If you ever wanted to move your iPad from the living room wall to the back of a car seat and then onto the ceiling, RingO is for you. The RingO Universal Tablet Mounting System from Vogel's is all about making your iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab easier to view in a variety of settings. It comes in two parts: a cover and a mount. The cover snaps onto the back of the tablet. The built-in round aluminum connector hooks up with any of a variety of mounts.

The $69.99 starter pack includes the case and a wall mount. The wall mount looks a bit like a hockey puck, but it's low profile enough to not throw off the feng shui in your living room. Once the tablet clicks into place, it can be rotated around. It might not impress like a wall-mounted 55-inch flat-panel TV, but you won't accidentally sit on the Galaxy Tab that you left on the sofa, either.

But why stop with walls?… Read more

Calling all cooks! A simple, affordable iPad kitchen mount

Thanks to apps like Epicurious, How to Cook Everything, and Martha's Everyday Food, iPads make excellent kitchen companions.

Just one problem: how do you protect your pricey iPad from the perils of the kitchen? I'm talking messy ingredients, hot stoves, sticky-fingered kids, and the like.

Simple: mount it underneath a cabinet. That not only gets it up off the counter (and out of harm's way), but also puts it closer to eye level so you're not constantly bending down to check your recipe.

One of the easiest and most affordable options I've found is the … Read more

Sony opens up E-mount specification to lensmakers

Hmmm. Earlier today, both Zeiss and Schneider announced plans to manufacture lenses for the Olympus/Panasonic-brainchild Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount for ILC (interchangeable lens) cameras. Hours later, a note from Sony has popped up in my inbox stating that it will open its competing E-mount specification up--free of a license fee--to all lens and adapter makers, starting in April.

When you think about it, Sony really didn't have much of a choice. Whatever inroads MFT has made in the market is partly attributable to the availability of lenses and adapters for legacy lenses. But it's also worth … Read more

Ricoh GXR Lens Mount Unit for Leica lenses

Ricoh today announced the development of the GXR Lens Mount Unit for its GXR interchangeable unit camera system. The GXR Lens Mount Unit module will accept Leica M-mount lenses, allowing access to a large selection of high-quality Leica M-mount lenses that date back to 1954, as well as third-party M-mount lenses such as those from Voightlander and Carl Zeiss. These are all manual-focus lenses.

In addition to the ability to accept Leica M-mount lenses, the GXR Lens Mount Unit will feature a 12.9MP CMOS APS-C sized sensor. There will also be a newly developed focal plane shutter.

How to keep disk images from automatically mounting in OS X

Disk images can be convenient ways to securely package and distribute files; however, there are a few issues that can crop up when using disk images. One of these is that depending on how the images are stored and used, they may automatically mount during normal system use.

When this happens it is likely because a file that is being stored on the disk image is being accessed. OS X will access a file by its full path, and if that path is to a disk image, then when opening the file path the system will try to open the … Read more

Car tech stocking stuffers by Dexim

Dexim--manufacturer of accessories for iPhones, BlackBerrys, and other smartphones--has sent us a pair of devices from its car solutions line of products.

The first is the DFU012 Touch Screen FM Transmitter, a universal adapter for smartphones and MP3 players that takes an audio signal and broadcasts it over a low-power FM channel to be picked up by a nearby car stereo.

The device runs on a single AAA battery and should work with any device that features a 3.5mm headphone jack or audio output. At an MSRP of about $30, an FM transmitter such as this is one of … Read more

When it comes to speakers, thin is in

British speaker manufacturer KEF is now offering a range of superthin (less than 1.5 inches deep) flat-panel speakers designed to look great mounted next to flat-screen TVs. The T Series speakers all feature a radically new ultralow profile bass/midrange driver and a new tweeter. Designing audiophile-grade skinny speakers isn't easy, but KEF might be able to pull it off.

The T Series models all feature KEF's Selecta-Mount system, which automatically adjusts the speaker's frequency response to compensate for how and where the loudspeaker is mounted. The idea is to produce a consistent tonal balance, for on-wall and in-room speaker placement. The T-Series speakers' thin driver technology was developed using finite element analysis (FEA) computer modeling. … Read more

3G sets up base camp at Mount Everest

The Khumbu valley, which leads up to Mount Everest, now has 3G coverage, according to Nordic telecommunications company TeliaSonera.

Ncell, a TeliaSonera subsidiary, launched 3G services covering the Khumbu region yesterday.

3G coverage on top of Mount Everest is a technical possibility, but the main aim is to provide coverage of the tourist walking route up to Everest, a TeliaSonera spokesman told ZDNet UK today.

Bracketron Nav-Mat II is a good kind of tacky

Yesterday, we took a look at Bracketron's MobileDock universal smartphone dock; today we get our hands on its Nav-Mat II, a dashboard-mounting solution for GPS devices that uses the same Temporbond technology to add a semipermanent attachment point for your existing GPS or smartphone suction cup mount to any vehicle's dashboard.

As you've probably guessed, we're big fans of dashboard mounting our GPS devices. Though nearly every device ships with a suction cup windshield mount, we'd rather attach to the dash. Dashboard mounting has the benefits of keeping your device closer for easier access and clear of the windshield for better visibility. Most GPS devices also ship with a dashboard-mounting disk, but this is often an adhesive-backed permanent mounting solution that isn't transportable from vehicle-to-vehicle and can potentially mar sensitive dashboard materials, such as leather, when the time comes to remove this puck.

That's where the Nav-Mat II comes in.… Read more

Bracketron MobileDock sticks the landing

Bracketron's MobileDock is a universal dashboard- and windshield-mounting cradle for most mobile devices and smartphones. It sticks to nearly any hard surface and holds nearly any phone, but the way it does so is a bit unconventional.

The unit features a suction cup mounting mechanism that locks into place with a lever, just like nearly every other suction cup mount that we've tested. However, the MobileDock stands apart because its cup uses what Bracketron calls Temporbond technology.

Essentially, the suction cup is made of a tacky material not unlike those sticky hand toys you get out of a gumball machine. The sticky material, combined with the cup's suction, allows the MobileDock to attach securely to nearly any hard surface. That means your can stick it to your windshield or dashboard without the need for an adhesive mounting disk. We even got the MobileDock to stick quite securely to drywall, so there shouldn't be many dashboard materials that can rock this cradle.… Read more
