Alleged iPad Mini screen, battery leaked in photos

No, it's not a complete version of Apple's much-rumored iPad mini, but it could be a few more pieces of the puzzle.

Parts reseller ETradeSupply, which posted accurate photos and videos of Apple's iPhone 5 casing some three months before its official debut, today has images of what it says is the 8-inch LCD screen for Apple's smaller iPad, as well as its battery.

Neither part is connected to any electronics, or other pieces of housing, though as ETradeSupply notes, the leaked images add credence to the fact that Apple will stick with a 4:3 … Read more

Oops! Microsoft outs Surface RT prices, starting at $499

Editor's note: Pricing on the Surface has since been confirmed. Click here for more details from the official announcement post.

Microsoft's Surface tablet pricing has been outed by the software giant.

Earlier today, Surface pricing was posted on the Microsoft Store online site. Not long after, the page was taken down, seemingly because the pricing information was put up on the site before it was supposed to go live. However, TechCrunch was able to snap a screenshot of the page before it was taken down.

Based on that screenshot, it appears Microsoft will sell its Surface with Windows … Read more

Anonymous turns its back on Wikileaks after paywall dispute

And the saga continues...Anonymous and Wikileaks got into a public tit-for-tat over Twitter yesterday about a donation overlay page that Wikileaks posted on its Global Intelligence Files. Anonymous called the donation page a paywall -- since it cannot be closed unless a donation is made or the Javascript is disabled -- and demanded it be taken down.

The page was taken down for a couple of hours in the evening and it looked like Anonymous had won the battle. But then, Wikileaks put it back up. And this time it's not only on the site's Global Intelligence … Read more

Leaked: Check out photos of RIM's BlackBerry 10 phones

Research In Motion may not be showing off its BlackBerry 10 phones anytime soon, but that doesn't mean photos of the devices won't leak out on their own.

Several renderings have popped up for the two phones, which include one full touch-screen device, and one with a Qwerty keyboard. CNET has seen the devices, and they match up with images posted on CrackBerry's Web site. CrackBerry pulled the images off a leaked marketing video, which has since been pulled.

The phones are the first products for the BlackBerry 10 platform and represent the company's best shot … Read more

Researcher says 100,000 passwords exposed on IEEE site

A computer scientist says he discovered that a server of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) had about 100,000 usernames and passwords stored in plaintext and publicly accessible.

Radu Dragusin, a computer scientist who works at FindZebra and is a teaching assistant at the University of Copenhagen, writes in a blog post that he discovered the problem last week and notified the IEEE about his findings, enabling them to "at least partially" fix the problem.

The data was publicly available on the IEEE FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server for at least a month, potentially exposing … Read more

Finding flaws in the iPhone 5

Monday's CNET Update is a bit scratchy:

Apple sold more than 5 million iPhone 5 units as of the first weekend. That's a million more than the launch of the iPhone 4S. But looks like Apple could have sold many more if there was enough supply. Several retail stores in major cities had only 8 or 10, according to reports, and didn't get enough to fulfill preorders.

When you have millions of people around the world racing to be the first to have one, there are high standards. So there's been quite a bit of press … Read more

iPhone 5 unboxing photos leak out ahead of launch

The iPhone 5 doesn't hit stores until this Friday, though photos of its insides have already hit the Web.

The insides of the box it comes in, that is.

Boy Genius Report today posted just three photos of Apple's latest iPhone model getting unboxed, a time-honored gadget tradition.

Inside are few surprises -- short of just how much space Apple's EarPods and their carrying case take up compared with the USB wall plug and new USB-to-Lightning cable. Apple released the EarPods as a standalone product last week, and now includes them as a standard accessory on the … Read more

New iPad Mini model hits the Web, but is it the real thing?

Apple's iPad Mini doesn't even exist, but yet another mockup of the device's appearance has surfaced.

Chinese tech site BoLoPad today published photos of what it claims is the iPad Mini. The images show a 7.85-inch tablet with an aluminum back casing. That casing includes the Apple logo, a hole for a camera, and the typical iPad markings, including the device's storage amount and legal jargon.

When examined at different angles, the device appears to resemble those leaked already, with the small Lightning connector on the bottom flanked by two speaker ports. One of the … Read more

Samsung files injunction against LG for leaks, report says

Samsung has filed an injunction against LG, its main rival in the television and display technology sector, over technology leaks, the Yonhap News Agency reports.

Samsung Mobile Display, an subsidiary affiliate of Samsung, submitted documents to the Seoul Central District Court against LG Display, about 18 "confidential technologies" for OLED screens and 21 other details, the news agency reports.

The court documents seek compensation of 1 billion won ($880,500) where each leak was passed on to a third party or where LG used the technologies, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Earlier this year, 11 … Read more

Yep, even more iPhone 5 photos leak

So much for Apple's veil of secrecy.

Another set of pictures and a video have emerged purportedly comparing the front face of the next iPhone, which many have taken to calling the iPhone 5, next to the face of an iPhone 4S. While the alleged images offer little in the way of new information beyond prior leaks, they offer up a good look at how the next iPhone may stack up against Apple's current flagship smartphone.

For the full set of images and videos, check out French Web site Nowhereelse.fr.

Of course, the photos could be fake, … Read more
