Dodocase launches new iPad 3 cases

Dodocase has updated its popular journal-style cases, modifying the milled bamboo interior tray to accommodate the slight change in depth for the new iPad. The company has also expanded the line, and now has three new models to choose from.

For an extra fee ($9.95), you can also personalize your case with an inscription. Adding a hole for the iPad's back camera will set you back another $4.95.

We've been fans of previous models of this case and should note that while it doesn't fold into a stand like some folio-style cases, you can fold the cover back and put the case in "easel mode" to prop up your iPad for video watching.… Read more

CNET looks at current and upcoming tablets

Editors' note: This list was originally posted on March 2 and is updated regularly. If sifting through long HTML tables isn't your thing however, skip over to our top tablets list or check out all our tablet reviews and features.

The tablet market is like that kid in school who, at first, no one really noticed. Then, a year later he starts the school year a foot taller, with a new wardrobe, and suddenly everyone wants to be his friend. But, does he deserve his newfound popularity?

I really don't know. Personally, I've yet to purchase a tablet, and I've still not seen a compelling reason to do so. Still, millions feel differently and have already dived full on into the tablet sector.

Yet, every day there seems to be a new announcement of another manufacturer's plans to release a tablet. It's getting confusing and a little crazy out there, and we at CNET wanted to provide you with a snapshot of not only the current tablet landscape, but a look into the near future and how it's evolving.

We've compiled a list of all the major U.S. released current tablets interwoven with all the tablets yet to be released in the U.S. Enjoy, and if there's any other information you'd like to see on this list, let us know in the comments or via e-mail. … Read more

Is the iPad's display a slam dunk?

Does the new iPad's pixel-packing display make it a must-buy?

I haven't seen the 2,048x1,536 display up close (yet), but this CNET hands-on video gives you an idea. Apple's Web page devoted to the display also gives you a pretty good tour of the technology.

By offering four times the pixel count of tablets on the market today, Apple is clearly pushing the display technology envelope. From the ongoing discussions I've had with NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim, it seems clear that LG Display and Sharp are struggling with production. Though main supplier Samsung … Read more

What makes the new iPad tick: A peek inside

The new iPad isn't waltzing into a competitive vacuum. That wow-worthy display notwithstanding, Apple still has to go head-to-head on performance.

Chip-review site Anandtech confirmed with Apple that sitting right next to the A5X's quad-core GPU (graphics processing unit) is a dual-core CPU (central processing unit).

Apple had nothing to say about the CPU (which typically garners the most attention) when it announced the new iPad, because the CPU really hasn't changed from the iPad 2.

The upshot is that Apple is pitting the A5X's quad-core GPU against a quad-core Nvidia CPU.

So, how does it … Read more

iPad's display is cutting edge--and a challenge for manufacturers

The new iPad's display is so avant-garde that Apple could have trouble keeping up with demand if it exceeds recent iPad 2 levels, according to a display analyst.

Cutting-edge tech: It's gratuitous at this point to say that the new iPad's 2,048x1,536 display is by any measure amazing--boasting a resolution typically found on large 24-inch class desktop displays.

Exactly how this is achieved is explained in a NPD DisplaySearch discussion about how Super High Aperture technology--by increasing aperture ratio--allows Apple to squeeze four times the number of pixels into the new display compared to the … Read more

Speck tweaking existing iPad 2 cases to fit new iPad

Speck already has a solid lineup of iPad 2 cases, so it's no shocker that it's simply making some tiny tweaks to that line to make the cases fit the new iPad.

The company is hustling to get out new versions of the PixelSkin HD Wrap, MagFolio, and WanderFolio. Some new colors are on tap, including Grape and Pomodoro for the PixelSkin HD, Mulberry for the MagFolio, and Black Peacock for the WanderFolio.

Prices range from $49.95 to $69.95. … Read more

Meet some people who bought an iPad 2 this week

Meanness has its place. This, though, isn't it.

Even though, it seems, certain people suffered severe visual and aural problems this week--ones that led to them to obtaining an iPad 2.

I can hear you groan in a manner you haven't since Brett Favre announced his last retirement. But life is hard. Not everyone is a techie. Some people are real human beings.

So I am grateful to Buzzfeed for being so infused with schadenfreude that it scoured Twitter to find people who apparently had no idea a new iPad was about to be born.

Please imagine how … Read more

Targus already shipping iPad 3 cases

After leaks in the past, Apple has been very careful about what information it doles out to accessory makers in advance of new product launches. It's unclear how much info Targus got from Apple (or some other source), but we can tell you an hour after the new iPad officially went live, we received some new case samples from Targus in packaging that was labeled "for iPad 3rd Generation."

That's a safe, generic way to describe Apple's third iPad, but since Apple is simply calling the new iPad the "new iPad" it leads … Read more

The 'new iPad': What's in a name?

Add this to the list of things that we didn't get with the next-gen iPad: a fancy new name.

During today's hour-plus-long launch event in San Francisco, Apple CEO Tim Cook and team unveiled details about the company's new tablet, simply calling it the "new iPad" throughout. Given that we got an iPad 2 and iPhone 4/4S, I thought for sure (as did many observers, from journalists to pundits to consumers), that the company would follow suit and was just holding the product's true name for a big reveal at the end of the presentation. But no, no, that's not what happened. … Read more

Apple dissing Siri on iPad is a big mistake

Considering that Apple CEO Tim Cook began the new iPad launch event with statistics including how Siri is everybody's best friend, it's genuinely surprising that Cook didn't reveal Siri for the iPad.

There's still Apple's "voice dictation" software on the iPad, a feature that's tied to the keyboard and simply converts your spoken voice to written text. However, you won't be able to set reminders, search for the weather by asking if you need sunscreen, and there's no sassy, personality-driven bit of artificial intelligence responding back to you.

So why, then, after proclaiming Siri's wonders and exporting "her" to Japan, why after giving her French language skills and an Australian accent, would Apple get cold feet about wedding its anthropomorphic assistant to the iPad? … Read more
