IBM launches private business analytics cloud

IBM on Monday is expected to unveil Blue Insight, a massive business analytics cloud that will hold more than a petabyte of data. This internal cloud computing environment will be the basis for future external services.

Internally, IBM's effort is dubbed Blue Insight, a business analytics cloud that will give 200,000 employees access to key corporate data around the world. Blue Insight will suck in data from 100 different data stores and warehouses. The data will then be dished out to salespeople and developers.

According to IBM, Blue Insight is a showcase of the "eat your own … Read more

Red Hat and Google share the CIO love

For years, Red Hat sat unopposed at the top of the CIO Insight Vendor Value study. In 2008, however, Google pushed Red Hat aside with its low-cost, easy-to-use enterprise applications. This year, Red Hat has come roaring back to share the top ranking with Google.

Could this be a sign of CIOs' restive relationships with traditional vendors and an increasingly insatiable appetite for the cost and ease-of-use advantages of open source and software as a service/cloud computing?

The answer is almost certainly "Yes." It is telling that old-school vendors like IBM (ranked 20th overall), Microsoft (25th), Novell (… Read more

Unintuitive outline program

InSight--in theory, at least--allows users to create outlines to organize information. Unfortunately, we found the program so confusing and unintuitive that it didn't allow us to do much of anything.

The program's interface contains a lot of unfamiliar-looking buttons. We were hoping that with a little bit of practice it would all start to make sense to us, but that didn't turn out to be the case. Even the program's QuickStart Guide was hard to understand (in part, we think, because of its obnoxious, 1990s Web site-style wallpaper, which made the text hard to read). We … Read more

Which of these cars deserves to be called the 2010 Green Car of the Year?

Every year, for the past four years, Green Car Journal picks its Green Car of the Year at the LA Auto Show. Well, the LA Show will be here before you know it, so it's time to start thinking about this year's contestants, which have been narrowed down to five finalists.

The finalists include the Audi A3 TDI, the Honda Insight, the Mercury Milan Hybrid, the Toyota Prius, and the Volkswagen Golf TDI. That's two VW turbodiesels and a trio of hybrids; or four small hatchbacks and a small sedan. No matter how you look at it, … Read more

Nico Rosberg Examines the Singapore Circuit

In case you haven't been following along, the Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix took place over this past weekend (Lewis Hamilton won, by the way). This race, in its infancy in the F1 repertoire, already has quite a reputation for the unique qualities of the race attributes and its environment in general. Today's web video takes a closer look at many of the features of the Singapore Circuit, courtesy of "Grand Prix Insights".

I know this is a little past the point since the race already took place, but I just found this video last … Read more

Norton 2010 in pictures

Symantec is betting heavily that program behavior is the future battlefront of security and is making a big push in its 2010 security program lineup with a behavioral engine called Quorum.

Take a tour of Norton Internet Security 2010 in this slideshow, and keep in mind that the look is very similar to Norton AntiVirus 2010. The biggest differences between the two include ancillary features, price, and the number of computers supported by one license.

Detailed numerological profiles

MB Complete Numerology Software gives users a comprehensive numerological reading. Although the results are thorough, some features of the program don't seem to work.

Like other programs from Mystic Board, the program's first screen is cluttered with advertisements for the publisher. Past that, users are asked to choose between Numerology Pro and the Numerology Pro Dictionary. There's no indication of what's contained in either of these. Proceeding to Numerology Pro allows users to enter their birth dates and then view 22 different aspects of their numerological profile, such as their Birthday Number, Karmic Lessons Number, Heart'… Read more

YouTube lets video creators share viewing stats

Google on Wednesday made a small change in YouTube's privacy settings that lets video creators share their viewing statistics with viewers.

Google has had Insight, its built-in, user-friendly analytics tool, since late March of last year, but up until now, only the user who had uploaded the video could see the extended information about who was viewing it. The new option gives general users the same amount of access to that information as the content owner.

The toggle, which lets viewers see the Insight information, can be turned on for all your videos at once. Users can also choose … Read more

Google gives partners analytics on YouTube pages

Google is giving brands and content publishers another way to track YouTube viewership metrics by letting them view it inside of Google Analytics.

Brands can now keep an eye on information that had not previously been available through YouTube's built-in Insight analytics system, including bounce rates, page views, stay time, and whether certain users are coming back for more.

It also takes the same geographic information that's been available in Insight, and lets you fine-tune it within the Google Analytics maps overlay, which includes additional filtering tools that can narrow down results by segment. Brand owners are also … Read more
