Dumb phones can be attacked too

Much of the discussion of security threats to mobile phones revolves around smartphones, but researchers have found that less advanced "feature phones," still used by the majority of people around the world, also are vulnerable to attack.

Feature phones have Web browsing, MP3 players, and other programs standard voice-only phones lack, but they have less computing power and feature integration than smartphones.

Because security research on feature phones has been eclipsed by research on popular smartphones like Android and iPhone, mobile researcher Collin Mulliner said he decided to turn his attention to the lower-end phones. After all, so … Read more

Apple releases new iOS 4.2 gold code

Wondering whatever happened to iOS 4.2? Although iTunes 10.1 dropped last week, Apple's firmware update never materialized--most likely due to a Wi-Fi bug that was discovered earlier in the week.

Now, as reported by Engadget and other sources, a new iOS 4.2 gold master (build 8C134b) was just pushed out to developers. Apparently the update fixes the Wi-Fi problem, which prevented at least some iPad users from establishing or maintaining a connection.

Update: I goofed. Apparently build 8C134b first appeared last Friday, not today. My apologies for positioning this as new information!

If you're a fan of the old N64 classic GoldenEye and look forward to Activision's remake for the Wii coming this fall, we're happy to note that Activision will be serving up a special bundle that contains a gold-colored Classic Controller Pro for $69.99.

The standalone game, which will retail for $49.99, does allow you to play with the Wii's motion controller, but many argue that the dual-analog Classic Controller Pro lends itself better to first-person shooters. Alas, a white Classic Controller Pro retails for $20, so you're not getting any sort of … Read more

Google rumored to buy virtual-currency start-up

A report Monday on TechCrunch suggests that, complementing its purchase last week of social-app manufacturer Slide, Google has made another social-networking buy: a virtual-currency software company called Jambool. A smaller purchase than Slide, TechCrunch put the price tag at about $70 million. Representatives from Jambool were not immediately available for comment.
