On Thursday, Pebble released an update to its iOS app for the Pebble Watch that added a workaround for e-mail alerts. Up until now, iOS users would have to go to Notification Settings and toggle the "View on Lockscreen" setting any time their phone and watch lost Bluetooth connection. So if the phone was restarted, or you simply wandered out of range for the two devices to stay connected, you'd have to do "the finger dance" (as named by Pebble users) in order to get alerts back. Even then, e-mail alerts were hit or miss. … Read more
On Friday Google decided it was time to give Gmail users their full-screen compose window back.
As the rollout of the "new" feature continues, you'll eventually see the icon to expand pop-up compose window. Clicking on it will reveal the full-screen compose window.
Now for the best part: you can set the full-screen window to appear by default going forward. To do just that, click on the More Options arrow in the lower-right corner of the compose window.
From here click on the "Default to full-screen" option, placing a check mark next to the listing. … Read more
Google has begun showing advertisements in the space reserved for e-mail messages in Gmail users' inboxes, a new step in the company's effort to turn its free services into revenue sources.
The company has shown ads alongside Gmail messages for years, but these ads appear as messages that can be opened like e-mails and forwarded to others, according to Gmail users who started seeing them last week. They appear only in the new "promotions" tab of Gmail's new multi-tab interface, and they're marked with a pale yellow background and labeled "ad," similar to … Read more

While the core functionality is roughly the same between Gmail and Mail, the added features that have been part of Gmail for the better part of a decade are on full display here and they make Gmail for iPhone one of the best all-around mail apps on the App Store.

Google has come to its senses with its Gmail app for Android.
A June Gmail overhaul dropped the delete button by default from the e-mail software, a move judged to be silly by me and by 88 percent of the CNET readers who responded to our poll.
Plenty of other people didn't give a fig, the button's absence wasn't a showstopper, and it could be restored by changing the settings, but I thought it a departure for a company that today is supposed to be fanatical about crafting a great experience for users.
Well, happily, it's … Read more
