Good things in small packages

ZIP files are a great way to compress larger files into a format that's easy to store and share. Although Windows comes with a utility for creating ZIP files, it's pretty basic and doesn't offer a lot of options. ZipGenius Suite is a full-featured program that lets users easily create, edit, and share ZIP files.

The program's interface is plain and intuitive, with large, graphical buttons across the top. The opening screen lets users go straight to the program's major features, which include creating a new archive, opening an existing archive, extracting files from an … Read more

Experience Miles Davis' music with all five senses

Miles Davis' music has always been a feast for the ears, but now it can reach all five senses: hearing, seeing, touching, smelling, and tasting.

It's the release of Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" in a "40th Anniversary Collector's Edition" box set that inspired the album's new sensory explorations. The set comes with a 48-page book; three CDs (two CDs containing the original 94-plus minutes of music with six bonus tracks); a third CD with a previously unreleased concert by Davis' group with Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, Airto Moreira, and … Read more

New Apple Store app makes reservations

When the Apple Store app first arrived on iPhones, it was little more than a shopping portal for Apple goods.

With the latest update, however, new features have arrived to make this app a keeper for any Apple customer who frequents a retail store.

The biggest of these is a retail store button that can not only book Genius Bar reservations or other one-on-one appointments, but can also reserve products for one-day pickup at a store.

As a small tease, the app also has a button for iPhone Reservations, but it currently doesn't reserve an iPhone. (UPDATE: product reservation … Read more

Boy bug hunter nabs $3,000 from Mozilla

It is no longer worthwhile for the average 12-year-old to make 20 bucks for cleaning someone's car. It is certainly pointless for prepimpled youths to make a little pocket money for, say, cleaning the house or, perhaps, washing their armpits.

Not when there's Mozilla ready to give them $3,000 for a little overdue diligence.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Alex Miller is one 12-year-old who knows exactly which side of his bread he wishes buttered. The moment he saw that the benevolent bosses of Firefox were offering 3,000 big ones in order to eradicate … Read more

Hands on: A look at Drive Genius 3

Hard drive/storage malfunction is one of the more common computer problems. When it happens, it can be one of the most frustrating experiences, not only because of data loss, but because the whole system can stop working if the boot drive is compromised.

Drives can suffer from a variety of issues such as mechanical breakdowns when firmware and controller boards stop working, as well as filesystem structure corruption if input/ouput problems cause an improper write event to the drive. The system is constantly writing and reading from the drive by moving files around, editing them, and tracking changes … Read more

Genius sidebar gone in iTunes 10.0.1

The latest version of iTunes seems to have done away with a feature that many people have come to use regularly: the Genius sidebar. Instead of a Genius sidebar with options for finding new songs based on the ones in your library, there is now a Ping sidebar that gives you access to the social network's ratings and purchasing options.

This may be useful for Ping users, but the Genius sidebar was used by many to quickly find new song and artist recommendations and may be frustrated by its absence. The only Genius feature still remaining in the iTunes … Read more

Genius recommendations added to iPad App Store

Apple has quietly updated its iPad App Store, allowing the tablet's owners to find apps with the help of the company's Genius recommendations.

When iPad owners load up their App Store app on the tablets, they will now see a "Genius" option next to "Updates." After turning it on, the feature lists several applications they might like, based on their previously downloaded apps. This is the first time Genius recommendations have been made available for the iPad. The tool has been offered in the iPhone's App Store for a couple years.

The iPad'… Read more

An iTunes cloud service not imminent, insiders say

An article about Apple's plan to "soon" launch a cloud service featuring music and movies stirred up a great deal of speculation on Thursday. "Soon," however, is a relative term because Apple has yet to snag licenses from the top four music labels, sources tell CNET.

The Boy Genius Report's article cited an anonymous source who declared that the Apple service will offer "streaming music and movies from Apple's servers to your computers," will sync iTunes with devices, and will stream content from a home computer to other Web-enabled gadgets.

The 404 572: Where it's time for a downgrade (podcast)

Jeff Bakalar is out sick today but luckily Natali Del Conte is back from her sojourn to San Francisco and fills in on today's episode of CNET's The 404 Podcast. I hope you had a better weekend than mine; I almost had a sleepover at the Apple Store after my iPhone inexplicably broke...again! The display on my 6-month-old phone stopped working, so I've decided to stick it out with a budget Samsung flip phone until the fourth-generation iPhone comes out.

Downgrading to a single-function handset from an iPhone requires some adjustment, but I'm quickly getting used to (and even enjoying) the simplicity of having separate dedicated devices for music and phone calls.

Boredom arrives much quicker without a smartphone, of course, but who really needs all those silly apps? I'm having a great time rediscovering the simple mundane pleasure of scrolling through "settings and options." What time increment should I set my auto-dimmer to today? The possibilities are endless!

Last night CBS' "60 Minutes" aired an interview with Conan O'Brien to get his personal take on the "Tonight Show" fiasco that left poor CoCo without a network to call a home.

Unfortunately, neither NDC nor I had a chance to check it out, but Wilson gives us the rundown on Conan's amicable responses and explains why Conan starts crying halfway through the segment. Check out CBS News for the full interview.

There are also plenty of hilarious Calls From the Public to play today including one listener who finally debuts an impression of Jeff that you won't want to miss. If you have something to tell us, leave us a message at 1-866-404-CNET or shoot us a line at the404(at)CNET(dot)com!

Buzz Out Loud 1215: Law & Order: Lost Prototypes Unit (podcast)

Dun DUN! Police break down the door of a Gizmodo editor's house looking for evidence of some sort of crime involving the lost iPhone prototype ... meanwhile, Nokia has to kind of pathetically blog about how someone took a prototype of the Nokia N8 and they would really, really like it back. It's a weird world out there. Also, the "Boy Genius" has been outed, Samsung might make a Google TV, and we're storing your data for you in Unicorn Town.
