I recently saw the film "2012," where Earth appears to finally tire of the human race and decides to get rid of us. That, coupled with what seems to be an increasing number of natural disasters, makes me think that maybe it's time we take this green-tech thing seriously.

Apparently I'm not alone. Last week in New York, eco-minded thinkers gathered for Greener Gadgets, a conference aimed at sharing ideas for environmentally friendly gizmos. One stand-out event was the Green Gadgets Design Competition, where concepts from around the world were voted on by the public, then assessed by a panel of judges, as well as audience members.

First place went to a concept app using an iPhone as a demo. The Augmented Living Goods project, invented by a student in the U.S., uses your smartphone's camera to scan the bar code on produce. It then consults a database and, after fixing your position with GPS, tells you how far your potential food has traveled and if it's currently in season locally, as well as historical pricing among other data that's useful for helping consumers make more informed, sustainable choices in what they purchase and eat.

Second place went to something I'd actually like to see in every apartment in the near future. It's a solar panel with two integrated USB chargers. As more and more gadgets (cell phones, iPods, digital cameras, etc.) start adopting USB "trickle" charging, the demand for USB power goes up. This Illumi-Charger by U.S.-based GreenWaves.org stores power when it's not charging your devices in integrated batteries. Unless you're living under a rock, you've probably heard that Apple announced its foray into the tablet computer space today. The new device, dubbed the iPad, looks like a monstrous iPod Touch and offers much of the same functionality. Get a closer look at the Kindle challenger right here.

We published a report last week about the release of Apple's new MobileMe Gallery app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. A new app was released this week by Apple for customers using its MobileMe online service. It follows in the footsteps of the previously released MobileMe iDisk utility and Apple's handy Find My iPhone.

MobileMe Gallery gives users the ability to view their gallery of movies and photos from either an iPhone or an iPod Touch. After installing the app, you log in with your MobileMe username and password and you have full access to all galleries attached to your account, whether they are public or private.

You can use multitouch gestures to flick left and right to move through photos, pinch to zoom, or rotate your iPhone or iPod Touch to view them in landscape mode. You can view or watch your friends' gallery photos and videos and share links to your own albums from an iPhone. An offline mode allows you to access previously viewed photos when not connected to the Internet.

Earlier this week I had the very awesome opportunity to attend the first flight of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Seattle. This is usually Daniel Terdiman's beat, but knowing that I'm a huge airline geek, CNET let me take a break from cell phones to cover the first flight. Google has opened up its gallery for developers to share Chrome extensions, a step that soon should make it easier for people to customize the open-source browser.

Aaron Boodman, a leader of the Chrome extensions effort, announced the move on a mailing list posting Monday, and programmer and "gallery master" Lei Zheng shared details in a blog post.

Google is on the verge of launching a Web site to showcase its extensions to customize what its browser can do.

The company's latest developer preview edition, Chrome 4.0.249.0, promotes the feature on its opening screen and its new-tab page. "New! Google Chrome now has extensions and bookmark sync," the page reads, offering a link to a site that's not public yet, https://chrome.google.com/extensions. (Bookmark sync is already available.)
