Zombies to fill brains at University of Baltimore

When a nearby college, Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., started offering classes on Star Trek's place in popular culture years ago, the old guard shook their heads in confusion and disgust. Had I a starship and a wormhole, I'd perhaps go back and offer up a new course that will be available at the University of Baltimore: Zombies 101.

As part of the advanced English course, students will learn about zombies from Arnold Blumberg, a renaissance geek who already teaches about comic books at the University of Maryland and has written or co-written books on Doctor Who … Read more

A casual RPG that's one of the best for iPhone

Space Miner: Space Ore Bust takes the old arcade classic Asteroids and mixes in some RPG elements and a sense of humor to create a truly entertaining game. Most of your time is spent mining different sectors of open space, using an onscreen joystick to turn and buttons for thrust and fire. By itself, blowing away the asteroids is pretty fun, but there's much more to Space Miner than a simple arcade shooter. Your base camp is your Uncle Jeb's mining facility, which also has a store to buy new ships and ship components and your apartment where … Read more

Measuring out a gram: There's an app for that?

OK, we're not really sure what demographic this fake iPhone pocket scale is aiming for, and we also don't condone illegal drug use, but we still have to admit this is pretty funny stuff.

It's just what it appears to be: a fake iPhone that conceals a pocket scale for weighing minute quantities of, uh, cinnamon. Or oregano, maybe. For discreet chefs on the go. It was found on a shelf in a head shop in (where else?) Amsterdam. That said, I've actually seen one in a convenience store here in Seattle.

Really, though, an iPhone? … Read more

Easy-to-use comic reader

It's not often that we come across a program we'd describe as "delightful," but that's exactly what Merlin Funnies is. This program provides a quick and easy way for users to view their favorite comics all in one place. With a simple interface and plenty of comics to choose from, Merlin Funnies is a great way to get your daily laugh.

The program's interface is fairly basic, with a long checklist of available comics. We were expecting the likes of Dennis the Menace and Hi and Lois, but Merlin Funnies offers a ton of … Read more

Drive, bear, drive!

Enviro-Bear 2010 is part game, part joke, part art piece, and part game-design experiment, but it's also a bold and ridiculous app that's basically a Rorschach test for gamers. Unlike any other game, Enviro-Bear 2010 challenges you to play as a bear driving a car who's trying to run over and then scarf up enough food to hibernate in the last 5 minutes before winter.

Whether you love or hate Enviro-Bear 2010, a couple of things are certain: the interface is deliberately difficult (reflecting, one might suppose, the difficulty a real bear would experience driving a car) … Read more

No joke: 'Funny or Die' coming to iPhone

Update: Article updated 7/31/09 at 8:50 am with more details about the app's projected release.

Good news for humorists--a dedicated mobile app for comedic video site Funny or Die will be coming to your iPhone, eventually.

Web content platform Babelgum announced on Thursday an exclusive wireless deal with Funny or Die to bring videos from the latter to mobile applications like the iPhone. Look for a Funny or Die app to hit Apple's iPhone App Store sometime in the very near future. Babelgum tells us it submitted the software to Apple for consideration on Thursday.… Read more

A new twist on salt and pepper

This salt and pepper shaker may not be the kind of thing you'd keep on your dinner table during a fancy dinner, but they'd certainly make a good gag gift.

The Moustache Salt and Pepper shaker are designed to fit together to form a perfectly twirled moustache. The halves are distinguished from one another by differing numbers of holes, and each is made from a solid piece of walnut. Which spice you decide to put into the half with extra holes is up to you: they come to you empty.

Even with its unconventional appearance, the set sold … Read more

Where top chef meets trivia night

When I was a kid, I used to read volume after volume of the Guinness Book of World Records. In my later years, this quest for knowledge of the world and the people in it developed into a love of science and experimentation, Trivial Pursuit, and Ripley's Believe It or Not. If, like me, you grew up loving random bits of trivial knowledge, you'd be just the type who'd love this Equal Measure measuring cup.

Not only does the cup provide you with the measuring accuracy needed for premium baking and cooking, it teaches you a few … Read more

Blender-powered plant saver scares kitty away

While some of you might think of the "Blender Defender" as mean, I don't. Animals kept as pets need to learn the rules. Cats and dogs, though, are notorious for deciding the rules don't apply when we, the owners, are away.

That is why one clever soul rigged up a blender filled with water to a motion-activated wireless Webcam aimed at the house plants his cat liked to nibble. When the cat would enter the frame, a networked upstairs computer would activate the water-filled blender--and a strobe light next to it--via an X10 wireless home automation module. … Read more

Fake blog, GadgetNugen, roasts gadget rumors

I'm the first to admit that we as gadget bloggers love good rumors. Without them, many of you readers wouldn't be hovering over that "refresh" button for hours when new Zune phone or iPhone speculation starts circulating. But sometimes the rumors are ridiculous.

Enter GadgetNugen, a new blog that roasts gadget rumors with speculations and complete falsehoods that are literally too good to be true.

The latest post, for example, features a rumor that Tesla is working on a giant electric SUV that can fit 24 people and has a 103-inch plasma display instead of a … Read more
