Denny Hamlin wins Tums Fast Relief 500, but...

Chances are if you're reading this, you're probably aware by now that Nascar driver Denny Hamlin won the Tums Fast Relief 500 "chase race" in Martinsville yesterday, where he led the race for over 200 laps. It's a big victory for Hamlin, not just because he guaranteed victory in Martinsville where he was squeezed out earlier this year by rival Jimmie Johnson, but also because it breaks Johnson's fall winning streak at this famous speedway. Hamlin's win on Sunday also broke Johnson's winning ways in this year's Chase as well.

Man accused of 'peephole hacking' ESPN star

A man has been accused of hacking at hotel peepholes and replacing them with tiny cameras in order to shoot voyeur videos of ESPN presenter Erin Andrews in the nude.

According to the New York Post, the videos, which in July caused many males of uncertain character to risk computer virus invasion in order to view them, were allegedly shot by Michael Barrett, 48, of Westmont, Ill.

Barrett has been arrested and charged with interstate stalking. The criminal complaint states that Barrett allegedly acted "with the intent to harass, to place under surveillance with intent to harass and intimidate, … Read more

Sports radio done right

Though only in its infancy, ESPN's sports radio app gets it right. It loads quickly, with ESPN's telltale ticker along the bottom that spits out headlines and scores for one sport after another. You can read stories in full-screen mode while you listen to one of 15 stations. There's the SportsCenter, too, serving up the latest news every 20 minutes, the PodCenter for accessing ESPN podcasts, and a nifty button for sending a text to the station you're streaming. Apple won't let apps run in the background, but ESPN Radio gets around that with a … Read more

It's missing no more. ESPN Radio streams ESPN shows, podcasts, and even live college football games from stations around the country.

This is sports radio done right.… Read more

BOL 1035: Gadget of the year 2006

CNET's Donald Bell previewed the Zune HD and it brought him tears of joy. But the rest of us think it's about three years too late. We also debate the need for Google to get into the video codec game and whether you need a Pico projector in your camera.

Some tweets now out of bounds at ESPN

For ESPN, the social-networking revolution will not be televised--or tweeted, blogged, or Facebooked. Not for now, at least, and not without ESPN's approval.

The sports network has apparently banned its workforce from posting any sports-related content on social-networking tools such as Twitter and Facebook without its permission. The news first came to light Tuesday when Ric Bucher, an NBA analyst for ESPN, tweeted that he had just received an network memo regarding tweeting:

The hammer just came down, tweeps: ESPN memo prohibiting tweeting info unless it serves ESPN. Kinda figured with was coming. Not sure what this means but … Read more

Virus spreads on promises of naked ESPN star

Many a college student adorns his dorm room wall with a picture, often large, of ESPN sideline reporter Erin Andrews.

It is not for me to declare that hers is the apogee of beauty. But the enthusiasm with which her image is often greeted by young men parallels that of the image of a carrot to a starving giraffe.

So perhaps one shouldn't fall to the rear and bump one's inverted baseball cap on the sidewalk to discover that some mischievous little miscreant filmed Andrews in a somewhat disrobed state through the peephole of her hotel room.

Cable group switches position: Net neutrality's OK

Go to ESPN360.com. Click on the link at the top that says "Watch Now," and see what happens. You'll either be let in to the viewing area or, more likely, told that you can't access the content because of your Internet service provider.

Why? Ars has it that Disney, the parent company of ESPN360.com, has partnered with certain ISPs to provide exclusive access to its premium content. If your ISP isn't a Disney/ESPN partner, tough luck. This, of course, violates the ideals of Net neutrality.

The Net neutrality position is, in a … Read more

The 404 330: Where Tuna Tuesday becomes Bacon Tuesday

Ace reporter Caroline McCarthy from CNET News joins the show today to bring us bacon chocolate from Foodzie. It's kind of like, Etsy but for food. Wilson doesn't partake in the bacon, but he munches down on the bourbon chocolate. Jeff's not a fan of swine cocoa, but Justin can't get enough of it.

However, Justin's not a fan of Apple's iPhone warranty policies. Apparently, he dropped his iPhone into a puddle of something. We're not exactly sure what, but we're pretty sure you can't drink it. Anyway, because of this whole ordeal, he's decided to become Justine.

Additionally, ESPN.com tries to be cool when it briefly enables the "Contra code" for its Web site. The hack lasted for about 45 minutes before it got shut down, but we give the site props for making unicorns and rainbows cool again.

It's Tuna Tuesday again, and we get a phone call from Tina. Finally, Twitter has become popular enough to ban at work. We get around it with this new Web app that fakes an Excel document with all your Twitters.

Be sure to check out Jeff Bakalar's appearance on Dan Levy's podcast "On the DL." He talks about tech and hockey. Lastly, a show about supercute kittens and puppies uses The 404 music loop. Didn't know the music could go both ways.

Sports fans heart pink unicorns!

ZOMG! Sports lovers who also love glittery pink unicorns with rainbow manes and tails were so in luck earlier Monday. Entering the Konami cheat code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, enter) at the official ESPN Web site made the cutest little ponies EVER pop up all over the site. And more clicks led to more unicorns.

But that's not all. Visitors also got their headlines in hot pink and the Comic Sans font--enough adorable to make any 10-year-old girl forget about Hannah Montana.

It's a good thing we found out about this little … Read more
