Watch SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket test fire in advance of launch

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and its attached Dragon spacecraft exhaled flames for a few seconds today at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

After pausing the first attempt at a test firing of the Falcon 9 due to a glitch just moments before the end of the countdown, SpaceX proceeded with a second attempt, which succeeded. The rocket remained stationary, but the system passed the "static fire" test with flying colors, putting Elon Musk's commercial space venture one step closer to reaching the International Space Station for the first time.

The test firing was the height … Read more

How one mobile startup looks to help you avoid waiting in line

LOS ANGELES -- Like most people, I hate waiting in line.

But with all the advances in technology, we haven't really been able to get rid of the old-fashioned queue. From fun roller coasters to mundane drug stores, I often find myself wasting time standing in line. And it bugs me to no end.

So it was music to my ears when I heard that mobile startup PayDragon had a novel approach to mobile payments: one that focused on getting people out of lines and directly to their products.

In this case, PayDragon has worked with a few food … Read more

Watch SpaceX test-fire its new engine...on the ground in Texas

Brace yourself, pyromaniacs. Put away all the matches before you watch the below video of SpaceX's new SuperDraco engine spewing flame.

Elon Musk's space exploration company released the video of a successful test-firing of an engine from a test site in McGregor, Texas. The SuperDraco could be used to propel SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft out of Earth's gravitational pull, and Musk claims it will be the safest such system in history and also capable of more accurate landings. As if to prove the point, there are plenty of completely flammable trees in the background of the test-fire site in the video.… Read more

iSkin fires up Year of the Dragon Aura case for iPhone 4/4S

In case you missed it, I wrote about iSkin's Year of the Dragon Aura iPhone case a couple of weeks ago. While it didn't quite make the official arrival of the Year of the Dragon, which kicked off on January 23, it came close, and is now shipping.

The case isn't exactly a bargain at $44.95, but it is pretty sweet (the dragon is etched into the metal back) and iSkin's offering up a promotion code to CNET readers for use on its site.

Just type in CNET-15 in the promo code box at check out to get 15 percent discount. That will basically get you free shipping and save you a few bucks. I know, not a bargain, but hey, it's something. … Read more

It doesn't look like iSkin will quite make the arrival of the Year of the Dragon, which kicks off on January 23, but it's trying to get close with its new "dragon-themed" iPhone 4/4S Aura cases, which were spotted at CES in Las Vegas.

iSkin was also showing another new line of cases for iPhones and iPads that will be released "by Spring" with a kind of ruggedly smooth leathery look that got a lot of good feedback at the show. That line will be called Vintage.

The company said Monday--at the International Consumer Electronics Show--that it will launch Dragon TV, a voice and natural language platform for TVs, devices and set-top boxes. Vertu's Year of the Dragon phone has roaring price

With the Lunar New Year less than three weeks away, luxury phone maker Vertu has launched a trio of phones to welcome the Year of the Dragon. Take your pick from the stainless steel and emerald; black stainless steel and ruby; or yellow gold and diamond models.

Vertu's Signature collection gets the royal treatment with precious stones and top-grade metals, plus a garish hand-engraved four-claw dragon on the battery cover.

It's not to be sniffed at; the dragon takes four craftsmen more than a day to complete the engraving. The yellow gold version is even sent to Switzerland for certification, then returns to the workshop for its precious-stone adornment. … Read more
