Sprint finally opens up on iPhone, 4G plans

Earlier this month, Sprint Nextel's leadership team sat dumbfounded on stage as an increasingly contentious audience of investors questioned the company's strategy of pursuing its own 4G network alone.

The investor presentation, which came mere days after the unveiling of the iPhone 4S, was among the most raucous in recent memory. The agitation only grew when the executives refused to talk about the financial impact of the carrying the iPhone, which came at a hefty price. The meeting ended with the team, led by Sprint CEO Dan Hesse, making a beeline for the exit.

"What we regret … Read more

Sprint CEO: We'll give guidance on the iPhone (scoop)

Sprint Nextel plans to shed more light on the financial impact of selling the Apple iPhone during its next quarterly report.

The company had always planned to provide more guidance regarding the iPhone, Chief Executive Dan Hesse told CNET during an event at the CTIA Enterprise & Applications show in San Diego. With the iPhone 4S not even out yet, he didn't believe it would be fair to provide any estimate so soon.

Sprint and Hesse caught a lot of flack on Friday when the company laid out its own 4G plans. Investors at the conference bristled as Hesse … Read more

Sprint CEO: Wireless industry can help our troubled economy

SAN DIEGO--Sprint Nextel Chief Executive Dan Hesse said the wireless industry can help get the troubled economy back on track.

"Mobile has a direct and powerful impact on efficiency, productivity, and the economic performance of any business in this country," Hesse said during his keynote address at the CTIA Enterprise & Application conference today.

Hesse, Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead, and AT&T head of mobility Ralph de la Vega reunited for another round of keynote addresses at CTIA. Unlike the last CTIA gathering in March, the executives were scheduled to speak in separate addresses, avoiding the … Read more

Windows 8 prerelease launching in coming months

Windows 8 is set to hit the prerelease stage over the coming months, according to a blog posted yesterday by Microsoft President Steven Sinofsky.

Though the term prerelease version is a bit vague, Sinofsky is likely referring to the beta of Windows 8 since he said that the company wants to "begin an open dialogue with those of you who will be trying out the prerelease version over the coming months."

Aiming the new blog series, "Building Windows 8," at customers, developers, and users in general, Sinofsky used the post to provide tidbits of information but … Read more

Verizon opens Application Innovation Center in SF

With a roomful of journalists and a live Webcast audience as his witnesses, Verizon CEO Dan Mead officially launched the Verizon Application Innovation Center in downtown San Francisco today.

"Innovation is at the very core of what Verizon does, and what we stand for," Mead said. "LTE has become one of the signature factors driving innovation."

A sister site of the LTE Innovation Center that opened last month in Waltham, Mass., the application arm is essentially an office space for a relatively small group of Verizon employees, including engineers, to work with application developers and partner … Read more

TW Cable loses 130,000 home-cable subscribers

Time Warner Cable said today the number of its residential cable TV subscribers shrank sequentially.

Time Warner's cable TV subscribers number 12 million after losing 130,000 customers, or 1 percent, during the second quarter, according to the company's earnings report.

In tech, we often assume that those people who have discovered that accessing TV shows and films over the Internet is cheaper and are dropping their cable subscriptions, also known as "cord cutting."

Whether cord cutting occurs because people are opting for Web-based TV is much debated. There's no question that some of the … Read more

A defense of charging more for Web TV (Q&A)

Apparently we were just kidding ourselves and the Internet really isn't going to send us to some digital TV Shangri-La, where all the content is free of charge, available at our fingertips, and stripped of commercial breaks.

All the signs coming out of Web TV over the past year or more tell us that the TV networks are done with their experiment with ad-supported online distribution and super low-cost content. The returns that these companies were collecting from Hulu just weren't attractive enough for them to brush off cable companies and other distribution partners.

Fox announced yesterday that … Read more

Windows 8 pre-beta build to be revealed next week?

Microsoft could show off a pre-beta version of Windows 8 next week at its Worldwide Partner Conference, according to WinRumors and other sources.

With WPC 2011 officially kicking off July 11, WinRumors cited a tweet on Tuesday from an account called @MSFTtm, which said that "Microsoft will release a CTP [Community Technology Preview] build of Windows 8" at the conference. Though a single tweet from an unverified source hardly makes it a done deal, WinRumors says this particular tweeter has been accurate in the past with news about Windows 8 builds.

Adding further fire to the rumors, tech … Read more

Microsoft VP hints at Windows 8 release in fall '12

Windows 8 is scheduled to launch in fall 2012, according to hints dropped by one of the company's corporate vice presidents.

Asking people to look into the crystal ball and assume that "what happened in the past is a reasonable indicator of what our forward looking timelines will be and just … Read more

While talking green, Sprint CEO slams T-Mobile-AT&T merger

SAN FRANCISCO--Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said earlier today that the proposed merger between T-Mobile and AT&T will create a duopoly in wireless that will slow innovation and move America backward.

"Competition will be stifled, growth will be stifled and wireless innovation will be jeopardized," he said while speaking at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. "We just can't let this happen."

Though Hesse largely focused on Sprint's green initiatives and the formal unveiling of the eco-friendly Samsung Replenish during his speech, he also took several shots at the deal that would create … Read more
