Apollon: The social-photography camera

Has it ever taken too long to get your images from the "official" photographer at an event? Well, that wait could be over if the Apollon comes to fruition.

Created by Dutch product designer Gordon Tiemstra as a school master's project, the Apollon lets multiple users with the same camera capture and share images. For example, Apollon camera users can sync their cameras and the day's images would be recorded in all Apollon cameras that are connected in some sort of wireless network.

The cameras can also be used in concert to capture panoramas that can then be stitched together with special software. From the looks of it, the shooter is equipped with its own remote, too. … Read more

For Harman, you are your phone

Harman International, in looking for a way to personalize the in-car experience, found that the most unique thing everyone carries is a phone. In its demonstration of a new dashboard electronics system, Harman pointed out that people are more likely to loan someone else their car keys than their phones.

At the 2012 Geneva auto show, Harman used Rinspeed's Dock+Go concept car to show off the new system. In the car we had a number of smartphones, each equipped with near field communications, belonging to a variety of different people (set up for the purposes of the demonstration). … Read more

Microsoft's 3D computer offers a world for your hands

The way we use computers now looks very antiquated compared with a new interactive see-through OLED display from Microsoft Applied Sciences.

Jinha Lee, an MIT Media Lab Ph.D. student and a research intern at Microsoft, worked with Cati Boulanger (a researcher at the company) on a new type of computer that seems like a stepping stone to something much greater. Lee describes the see-through 3D desktop in greater detail on his personal blog. … Read more

Playboy's next fantasy? A men's club in space

Space is already full of heavenly bodies, but apparently not enough of the kind to satisfy those at Playboy, which is taking matters into its own hands.

The adult magazine company has come up with a concept for a Playboy Club in space that includes a zero-gravity dance club and Playboy bunnies with jet packs. The "intergalactic entertainment destination" is featured in the March issue of Playboy, which is out on newsstands now, and is described as a cruise ship in space by the article's writers, A.J. Baime and Jason Harper.

Baime and Harper collaborated with various individuals on the project, including artist Thomas Tenery, Virgin Galactic head designer Adam Wells, and former NASA scientist Stan Kent, to figure out the design and features of the Playboy space club. Together, they dreamed up a wheel-shaped space station that has everything from a casino to a restaurant to "orbital pleasure domes." … Read more

Another look at Toyota's Geneva-bound FT-Bh concept

What we could only glimpse as an overexposed silhouette yesterday begins to take solid form today. Toyota has just released two new teaser photos and a video heralding the arrival of its latest hybrid concept, the FT-Bh.

Along with the media, we also got a smattering of details about this concept. For starters, the Future Toyota B-segment Hybrid (FT-Bh) is expected to weigh less than 800 kg (or about 1,764 pounds), making it lighter than Toyota's tiny Aygo--lighter even than the first-generation Mazda Miata by about 300-400 pounds! Toyota also claims that this B-segment five-door will be … Read more

D-Can: The camera of the future

Meet the D-Can, a concept camera that resembles a military-grade spotting scope equipped with long-zoom capabilities.

Straying from traditional camera designs (though it's somewhat similar to the Lytro camera), designer Jean-michel Bonnemoy believes the form factor of today's cameras should be updated to a cylindrical design for better ergonomics.

This concept snapper features an ISO range of 100 to 6,400 and comes with a long-zoom lens coupled with image stabilization capabilities. Its lens cap doubles as an electronic flash--capable of firing an AF-assist beam at the same time. … Read more

Sony envisions future with pay-as-you-go power

Sony is looking to revolutionize the inefficient way in which we consume power.

A new concept video from the electronics giant shows how we could use power more efficiently in the year 2030 by switching to smart outlets with authentication and wireless charging on a broad scale, assuming we survive the zombie Mayan apocalypse.

The prototype power outlet, integrated with a short-range wireless FeliCa transmitter (and a new RFID over power line technology), allows the user to swipe a pay card across the faceplate and pay for energy on the spot. What makes it truly interesting is if humankind keeps progressing towards alternative energies (such as wind, solar, and biomass), then our outlets could give us options as to what source from which we obtain our power. The video description notes that with this outlet, "the user can actively control and manage power consumption on a user basis as well as on a device basis." … Read more

Wrap your head around this BlackBerry concept

Remember Nokia's concept phone with a flexible screen?

Well, designer John Anastasiadis has applied it to a BlackBerry concept phone featuring a display that wraps around to the back.

The additional screen real estate enables separate work spaces to be set up on the front and back of the phone. Due to the flexible screen technology, the phone is light and has the ability to differentiate between an intentional command and a hand that's just holding the phone. … Read more

Nokia Lumia 'Coffee' tablet concept looks piping hot

Nokia continues to remain coy about its plans for a Windows 8 tablet, but a little thing like that isn't going to stop people from imagining what it might look like.

My Nokia Blog reader Tristan submitted this sleek concept called the Lumia Coffee Tab. Taking major design cues from the Nokia Lumia 800 and 900, Tristan imagines the tablet with a 9.7-inch AMOLED (1,280x800 pixel) clearback display for use with Windows 8's Metro touch user interface. … Read more
