Panasonic camcorders concentrate on quality

LAS VEGAS--With updated naming conventions and fewer offerings than last year, Panasonic's somewhat stolid lineup resists jumping on the Wi-Fi bandwagon.

This year's camcorder lineup from Panasonic is a refreshing change from previous years. Not only did the company take the opportunity to rationalize its offerings, simplifying its nomenclature with the convention that "M" indicates the model with built-in memory, but it's also pruned the number of models. Plus, this year it joins the march of companies declaring the death of the hard-disk camcorder.

One thing that hasn't changed is Panasonic's annoying practice … Read more

Panasonic sees 2012 as year of Web-connected TVs (live blog)

LAS VEGAS--Envisioning 2012 as the year of Web-connected TVs, Panasonic has announced its smart TV system has exclusive deals with Flixster and Disney.

In addition, MySpace is partnering with the company for MySpace TV, a social TV service that will allow users to share the latest shows, TV, and music with their friends. None other than Justin Timberlake showed up on stage to tout the service.

The company also announced a partnership today with NBC to broadcast the 2012 London Olympics in 3D. Panasonic shared the news at its press conference at CES. Opening and closing ceremonies at the Olympics … Read more

How cheap can cheap camcorders get?

LAS VEGAS--Samsung is helping hit a new low price for 1080/60i video.

There isn't much to say about Samsung's minimalist camcorder announcements for CES this year. There's going to be one entry-level model in two flavors: a $349 Wi-Fi-capable one, the QF20, and a bare-bones uncommunicative one, the Q20.

An update to the Q10, with its somewhat gimmicky rotating "switch grip" that's graduated to Switch Grip II, the Q20/QF20 doubles the zoom range to 20x and adds an Art Time Lapse effect.

You'll be able to get these babies in March.… Read more

Toshiba adds 3D and Wi-Fi to Camileo minicamcorder lineup, picks up where Flip let off

LAS VEGAS--The Flip may be dead but Toshiba's Camileo line isn't.

The company introduced two new mini digital camcorders at CES, one--the Z100--offers stereoscopic 3D recording, and the other--the Air10--has built-in WiFi that allows you to post videos on the fly to social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The Camileo Z100 3D camcorder is a barrel-style camcorder that will hit stores in April for $219. It records in both 2D as well as the 3D format and has a flip-out 2.8-inch, glasses-free 3D LCD touch-screen display that shifts to 2D when you want. … Read more

Canon camcorders stay the course at CES 2012

LAS VEGAS--Canon's consumer camcorders for 2012 make for boring news, but will probably be pretty good products.

Compared with the whizzy C300 debut, any subsequent consumer camcorder announcements from Canon are bound to be pretty dull. Luckily for Canon, the updates to its 2012 camcorder line look like a decent set of upgrades that will improve on already solid products.

Certain things haven't changed since their debut a year ago. The G10 continues at the top of the prosumer line without replacement, and Canon didn't mention the HF S30 at all during our briefing. The company instead … Read more

Standard definition, hard-drive camcorders absent from CES 2012

Despite the presence of the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) show, integrated for the first time into the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, it looks like the next show may have the fewest new camera announcements in recent memory.

In fact, the PMA exhibitor list looks woefully small, and seems to be populated by accessory manufacturers. It's not unusual for the show to have a lot of the little guys, but with all the camera manufacturers displaying their wares on the main show floor (or not showing at all, like Olympus), it's clear that the consumer camera market has evolved … Read more

Five great Cyber Monday deals

Happy Cyber Monday! I've always preferred this "holiday" to Black Friday, as it allows me to shop in my preferred garb: bathrobe and slippers. (Tried that on a Black Friday once; I am no longer welcome in the mall.)

In the meantime, here are some assorted Cyber Monday goodies … Read more
