Buzz Out Loud Ep. 1301: Apple waves the phishing flag (podcast)

Turns out, when you announce to the world that you've got 160 million users, all of whom are tied to a credit card, you kind of call the phishers your way like a horde of hungry zombies. Hence: Ping comment spam. Also, HP is going to actually produce memristors, 4chan is throwing birthday parties for sweet old men, and Boxee CEO Avner Ronen joins us to talk about why Apple TV doesn't scare him one bit. --Molly

Boxee uses Apple TV to talk Box pricing

In an attempt to capitalize on the talk surrounding the Apple TV, Boxee revealed in a blog post earlier this week that it will start selling its anticipated Boxee Box in November for $200.

"We all watched the Apple announcement," Boxee CEO Avner Ronen wrote on his company's blog. "We walked away feeling confident about the space it left for Boxee to compete. We have a different view of what users want in their living rooms."

Ronen then said that the Boxee Box "is going to be $100 more expensive than the Apple TV, … Read more

D-Link's Boxee Box to ship in November

Despite the fact that the Boxee Box seemed to be a fully functional device at CES 2010, D-Link announced Friday that it has delayed the shipping of the much-anticipated online HD media streamer until November. Originally, the player was slated to be available around the second quarter of the year, which is now.

According to D-Link, the reason for the delay is that the two companies, D-Link and Boxee, have decided to take "the time needed to deliver the product we've wanted from the beginning, one that exceeds your expectations and sets the standard for accessing stuff from … Read more

Wolfgang's Vault concert app hits Boxee

Fans of live music and Boxee's free media-streaming software have reason to celebrate today.

No, it's not the Boxee set-top box (though they really should get cracking on that thing before Google spoils the party). Instead, users have access to a new streaming-music app that draws from the cherished Wolfgang's Vault catalog.

With live concert recordings that date from the 1940s to present day, the Wolfgang's Vault Web site has a loyal following of music fans. The Boxee app version of the music service (pictured above) repackages the archives of the vault into an attractive, easily … Read more

Hulu's profitable, but direction still uncertain

One of the most closely watched races in online video the past two years has been between Hulu and YouTube, and it appears Hulu has just earned some bragging rights.

In a New York Times interview, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar said the streaming video service has posted profits in two quarters (though he provided few details). Kilar also said that revenue surpassed $100 million in 2009.

Profits are a significant benchmark for the company, jointly owned by News Corp., NBC Universal, and Disney. Two years ago, Google's YouTube reigned over online video nearly unchallenged. YouTube employees snickered at the … Read more

Boxee back (again) on Apple TV

Though Boxee is working on its dedicated Boxee box, the software maker is still trying to keep up with Apple TV.

The free software that streams Web content directly to the TV will once again work with an Apple TV box, according to a posting on the company's blog. There's no official Apple support for Boxee, but it's been a back-and-forth between Apple TV software updates and Boxee updgrading its own beta software.

Boxee's instructions are here if you want a little programming adventure in your life. If you already have Boxee Alpha installed, it's … Read more

Digg reworks its browser extensions, Boxee app

Social news site Digg relaunched its Firefox extension on Tuesday, adding a small number of iterative improvements. The company also launched an extension for Google's Chrome browser, which lets users see if a story has been submitted to Digg, as well as vote on it--all without leaving the page.

Both extensions show a count of how many Diggs a story has if it has been submitted, as well as a speedy way to submit links if they haven't. They also let users share any page they're on, not just through Digg, but on social networks like Twitter … Read more

LAS VEGAS--Boxee is in the business of letting you watch Internet content on your TV. The company has long offered software to make that possible via third-party hardware ranging from Windows PCs to Apple TV boxes, but it now plans to launch its own hardware--the Boxee Box--in partnership with D-Link.

Boxee founder and CEO Avner Ronen has a lot to say about this powerful new trend, including advice for independent producers who can use Internet technology to "get an audience and monetize it."
