Twitter delivers news of bin Laden's death first

Once again, Twitter carried vital information to Americans ahead of traditional news outlets.

The news that American special forces had killed Osama bin Laden, perhaps the most wanted man in the world, first began to trickle out when the White House communications director posted on Twitter that President Obama planned to address the nation at 10:30 p.m. eastern time, The New York Times reported Sunday evening.

Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks were also where people went to speculate--much of it erroneous--about what the president would discuss during his address to the nation.

According to the Times, the … Read more

Woman puts cat in bin, Web strikes back

As the history of the world over the last year or two has shown, it is not easy to work in a bank. It places special, even unique, pressures on individuals, so that some make the occasional "split second of misjudgment."

Such a split second occurred for the clearly stressed British bank worker Mary Bale, who tried to bring a little levity to her day by putting a cat in a trash bin, where it remained unrescued for 15 hours.

There will be some who will say: "Well, at least it wasn't a baby." Yet … Read more

Better binning

Satalink's Recycle Bin Manager improves on the native capabilities of the venerable Windows Recycle Bin, which does a decent job but has limitations that can make recovering files problematic and offers little in the way of options for emptying its contents. Recycle Bin Manager lets you set when and if it deletes certain kinds of files and from which drive, so some types get the quick heave-ho while others hang around a while, preventing the accidental deletion of critical file types.

Recycle Bin Manager's main interface, the file manager window, is efficient and sparse, just File, Edit, and … Read more

Cryptic messages

Just as its name suggests, DataRecovery aims to recovery files that had been deleted, including compressed and encrypted files. It also claims to wipe files so that they cannot be recovered. However, we were not impressed by its unintuitive, amateurish user interface.

The user interface offers very little direction with its vague commands. It consists of three commands--Scan, Wipe, and Recover. There are no other settings or configurations. We selected a hard drive and clicked the Scan button. The program did scan our computer very quickly, but a window popped up that was difficult to decipher. It had something to … Read more

Bargain apps and zombies attack: iPhone apps of the week

It's happened to just about everyone who has bought an iPhone application at the iTunes Store: At some point the application you paid $7.99 for goes on sale for $1.99--sometimes it's even free the next day. I've had this happen to me many times, but only because it's part of the job to get applications when they're hot off the presses. Fortunately, as part of the job, I don't have to (personally) pay for the applications I review. Most people aren't so lucky.

Fortunately, an application made for bargain hunters that … Read more

Separate your recycling fast

I've thrown recyclables into the trash more than once: if I don't have a place to put a bottle separate from cans or newspapers, I don't want to worry about it. I certainly don't want to stick all of my recycling into just one bin. Sorting it back out again is time consuming, and can be a little gross. Ideally, I'd like to have three different recycling bins in my kitchen--but there's absolutely no room for them. However, the Three Section Recycle Bin provides a space-saving option that will fit in my kitchen.

Launch several OS's from one disc

Highly versatile and especially proficient with boot discs, UltraISO Premium creates, edits, and burns disc images in several popular formats: ISO, BIN, Nero, Alcohol, CloneCD, and Xbox. It also converts images among formats. UltraISO supports data and audio/video discs and includes a simple MP3 encoder, but it really excels at creating bootable discs. It even can create a disc with a menu for booting several OSs.

The interface is well organized, though rather plain, and we wish its icons were more readable. Also on the negative side, the program can't mount CD images, which will diminish its value … Read more

Letting your data go for good, without a computer

Keeping data is crucial, there's no doubt about this. Data backing up has evolved from as painful as copying files onto a floppy disk to an eye candy with Apple's recent invention of the Time Machine.

However, on the other hand, completely losing data is equally important, when you decide to let go your old hard drive. Trashing files from within the operating system generally doesn't make the information completely go way. And you don't want it to be retrieved by people with ill intention.

Today, Wiebetech introduced the first standalone, consumer-friendly hard drive wiping device … Read more

A folding keyboard for bands that do yoga

We've spent altogether too much time on guitars lately, whether they be real, virtual or even double-necked. The infatuation even extends, so to speak, to those that can do yoga.

But it's in this last category that we can bridge to another flexible instrument, this one in the form of a folding keyboard. Much to the delight of roadies everywhere, the "Vax 77" from Infinite Response folds in half specifically to fit into those ridiculously tight overhead compartments on airplanes according to FAA carry-on specifications. It also weighs about 25 pounds, which Technabob says is roughly … Read more

Researcher: Bin Laden's beard is real, video is not

On the Friday before the sixth anniversary of 9/11, Osama bin Laden appeared in a new video, his first since prior to the U.S. presidential elections in 2004. In analyzing the video, Neal Krawetz of Hactor Factor, an expert on digital image forensics, said in his latest blogs that the video contained many visual and audio splices, and that all of the modifications were of very low quality.

Most striking is bin Laden's beard, which has been gray in recent images. For this video it is black. "As far as my tools can detect, there has … Read more
