AVG Free gets faster in 2011

The bottom line: Although AVG has flagged a little in the past few years, AVG Anti-Virus Free 2011 breathes some new life into one of the most popular security programs around with a shorter install, better usability, and faster scans.

Review: The never-ending mantra chanted by security suite vendors sounds a lot like "faster scans, easier to use, better performance," and AVG has released a new version that it says accomplishes all three. Certainly, the scans are faster, it does install more quickly, and some tweaks to the interface have made it easier to use. However, changes to … Read more

Browser powers and video tools

Three things are on the tips of our tongues lately: Internet browsers, security suites, and video-editing apps. Let's start with the first. NetApplications' browser usage statistics for September provide a look at who's gaining clout on the Web: Google's Chrome, twin mobile powerhouses Apple iOS and Google Android, and Microsoft's IE9. In other browser news, Chrome enjoyed an update that added activation by default of the WebGL 3D graphics technology, an option for built-in Google Instant search results, and some hardware acceleration for some CSS transformations--to the dev version, at least.

On the security side of … Read more

AVG 2011 banks on better performance

The never-ending mantra chanted by security suite vendors sounds a lot like "faster scans, easier to use, better performance," and AVG has released a new version that it says accomplishes all three. AVG Anti-Virus Free 2011, available today exclusively from CNET Download.com, looks and feels like an overall better program.

The new AVG Free has a faster installation process. It's not as zippy as the minute-long installations that some of AVG's competitors offer. I found that the program can go from completed download to ready to use in about 5 minutes. A big contributing factor … Read more

Data-stealing 'Mumba' botnet hits 55,000 systems

A criminal gang has stolen over 60GB of data using a botnet that has infected around 55,000 computers around the world, according to a report from security company AVG.

The botnet, which AVG has dubbed "Mumba," has compromised systems in the U.K., as well as in the U.S., Germany, and Spain, the company said in a report (PDF) released Monday. The stolen credentials found by AVG's researchers includes bank account numbers, credit card details, and social-networking log-ins.

"The Mumba botnet--so called because of some funky attributes our researchers found on the server--was created … Read more

Upgrades and downgrades

Opera browser users will be pleased to know that the beta released two weeks ago, Opera 10.6, is coming your way in full force in a general release this Thursday. Version 10.6 incorporates an anti-malware detection system powered by AVG, more HTML5 capabilities, and improved performance overall.

In other upgrade news, Trillian (current version), the all-in-one instant messaging program, will soon be replacing what we think is a jarring, outmoded interface with a sleeker, more modern skin. The upcoming Trillian 5 is optimized for Windows 7 and will also include mobile-syncing features and an array of new social-networking … Read more

AVG joins Opera on stage

Updated at 2:12 p.m. on July 1: Opera spokesman Thomas Ford said in an e-mail to me that he's "almost certain" that Opera's new AVG anti-malware detection system replaces the previous one that Opera used, which had been provided by Haute Secure.

The first beta of Opera 10.60 was released only two weeks ago, and on Thursday it graduates to a wide release and sheds its beta tag. Opera 10.60 for Windows, Mac, and Linux incorporates security enhancements provided by popular freeware antivirus vendor AVG, improves performance, adds further HTML5 compatibility, and … Read more

Already an enormously popular developer for the Windows antivirus category, AVG launches this bare-bones Mac version of its Link scanning technology to help prevent Mac users from visiting dangerous Web sites. As the only product AVG makes for Mac, this small program is not meant to sell you anything as there are no paid products from AVG for the Mac platform.

The Mac-like interface of LinkScanner lets you activate two types of protection. The Search Shield uses Web browser plug-ins that check search results … Read more

LimeWire enlists AVG for user protection

LimeWire's peer-to-peer file-sharing network is notorious as a malware ghetto, where distributed files that have legitimate-sounding names turn out to be Trojan horses hiding pernicious threats. In an effort to attract more users to the LimeWire premium upgrade and to protect those users better, the company signed a deal with AVG on Tuesday to extend download file scanning and blocking to LimeWire Pro users.

By integrating AVG's antivirus SDK engine, all files that LimeWire Pro users download will now be scanned before they run. A pop-up will appear letting users know when a file has been scanned or … Read more
