Mitsubishi chooses Geneva for rebirth

Facing a lack of coherency in its current model lineup, Mitsubishi promises to launch a new series of vehicles identifiable by a common design language, beginning with a new car at the 2012 International Motor Show in Geneva.

Mitsubishi's major recent launches were the Outlander Sport and the i Miev electric car, two models with very little in common. There have also been rumors that the company will discontinue the Lancer Evo, although Mitsubishi seems likely to keep the name but use a more economical engine.

So it is high time for a model shake-up, and Mitsubishi promises that … Read more

Rinspeed adds axle, battery pack to Smart Electric Drive

The Rinspeed Dock+Go debuts at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show in March.

The biggest problem with current electric car technology is limited range. People want more than the 80 miles most electric cars can realistically achieve. Rinspeed, a Swiss automotive modifier that previously showed off such concepts as the submersible sQuba and the polymorphic iChange, offers a solution.

Its Dock+Go concept starts as a simple Smart Electric Drive, the electric version of the Smart car, and adds what Rinspeed calls a Backpack. This second piece, supported by its own axle, attaches to the rear of the Smart. Frank … Read more

Order your 918 Spyder Hybrid now--for $845K

If you've got a little bit of extra cash lying around, jump on this offer. Porsche today announced that dealerships would be taking orders for the 918 Spyder--and the plug-in hybrid super car will sell for a mere $845,000 in the U.S. (that's 645,000 euros).

The 918 Spyder concept made its debut last year at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and was also spotted last year at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The 918 Spyder design was inspired by the 918 Carrera GT super sports car and the 917 and RS Spyder race cars. Like the 2010 concept car, the production version will be made from a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque. However, the production version will have a manual roof system with removable panels that can be stored in the front luggage compartment, Porsche said.

The speedy hybrid will do 0 to 60 mph in about 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 199 mph. As previously reported, the 918 Spyder will be powered by a unique plug-in hybrid system that includes a high-revving, mid-mounted V8 engine with a capacity of more than 4.0 liters and producing at least 500 horsepower. Two electric motors--one each on the front and rear axles--together produce additional 218 hp.… Read more

2011 Geneva auto show: 2012 Mercedes SLK

The SLK has always been a lesser SL--way lesser. But, as Brian Cooley shows us, it might actually be coming up to snuff alongside its very pricey bigger sibling. Hmm, you may be able to drive it without that bag over your head (think how much more you'll be able to enjoy the open top.)
