Fav.tv unveils its social, interactive TV guide

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--One of the biggest problems for those interested in talking online about their favorite TV shows is the fact that few people watch live anymore.

What often happens instead is that conversations on Facebook, Twitter, or other online social services tend to take place even as some people are trying desperately not to come across spoilers before they watch their programs on TiVo or some other digital video recorder. And at the same time, conversations are disjointed and usually don't help fans get the best and latest information about shows they love.

These are some of … Read more

Lesson from Steve Jobs? Make great products

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--The biggest lesson that Apple board member and longtime Steve Jobs adviser Bill Campbell learned from the former CEO? "Make sure you have great product."

Campbell, known as "Coach" to friends and some peers, may not be as known in the world of technology as he should be. The chairman of the board of Intuit, and an Apple adviser and board member who also has several other high-level tech-industry positions, appeared at the Demo Fall conference here today, in conversation with Bloomberg reporter Brad Stone.

Over the course of a 20-minute rumination on … Read more

Whoops! Hoffman opens both TechCrunch and Demo shows

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--If there's one thing that late night TV hosts like David Letterman and Jay Leno are said to hate, it's when a star books both their shows back to back.

The tech industry doesn't have its own Letterman and Leno rivalry, but one could say that this week's head-to-head TechCrunch Disrupt and Demo Fall shows are a pretty good analogy.

So it was a bit strange to go to both shows this week and see the same high-profile kick-off speaker at each, LinkedIn founder and Graylock Partners principal Reid Hoffman. And both presentations … Read more

Countdown to fall TV

With less than five weeks until the start of the new fall television season, marketing for premieres is in full swing. It's all about great content and communicating the message clearly to the viewing public. People have more choices than ever, so we have to work hard to break through the clutter with the message of our five new shows ("Person of Interest," "2 Broke Girls," "Unforgettable," "How To Be A Gentleman," and "A Gifted Man")--and two returning series changing time periods ("CSI" and "The Good Wife"). … Read more

Play an '80s classic on your iPhone

What more can one say about Tetris? The megapopular classic '80s action puzzle game from Russian programmer Alexey Pajitnov is now available for the iPhone, featuring everything you loved about the original, and some added bonuses to keep the game interesting. The game is crystal-clear with Retina Display support and the simple interface requires only swipes and taps on the screen to move, rotate, and drop pieces on the board. Sometimes the tap-to-rotate and swipe-to-move method can be a little frustrating (it's easy to make mistakes), but we were mostly able to enjoy the classic game on our iPhone … Read more

Angry Birds through the seasons

Angry Birds Seasons lets you play the popular birds vs. pigs game, but with themes that match every season. You can play among jack-o'-lanterns and white-sheet ghosts in the fall; snowmen and Santa-capped pigs during the winter; or brightly colored eggs and bunny hats when it gets close to Easter. You can play whichever season you want right away--you won't need to unlock every level in order to unlock new themed worlds. With that said, the gameplay is no different than you've come to expect with Angry Birds, but maybe that's a good thing--most people love … Read more

New Verizon CEO eyes next iPhone in the fall

Incoming Verizon Communications Chief Executive Lowell McAdam said he expects the next iPhone to launch in the fall, although even he isn't sure.

"You will have to ask Apple that, but we expect that probably sometime in the fall, and I think you will see a significant jump there when we get to that point," McAdam said today during a conference call.

McAdam explained that Verizon's plans to push more customers into smartphones have lagged a bit because it previously thought a new iPhone would launch in the summer. With the next iPhone delayed, people have … Read more
