Silicon Alley Insider reported Wednesday morning that after 26 years in circulation, Ziff Davis Publishing's PC Magazine will issue its last print edition in January 2009. Going forward, all of its publishing efforts will shift to the online edition, PCMag.com. We're told the majority of the magazine's content editors will remain on staff, however, members of the print production, ad sales, and circulation staff have been let go.
If the idea of buying a print publication for technology news seems anachronistic today, during the height of its run, PC Magazine was a star of the magazine … Read more
Citing economic troubles, Ziff Davis Media has canceled this year's DigitalLife Expo, a trade show held each fall at New York's Jacob Javits Convention Center.
"The poor economic conditions have created a very different and difficult dynamic for us this year, and we weren't confident that we could present a show experience that was consistent with the successes of prior years," DigitalLife Vice President Paul O'Reilly said in an e-mailed statement. "Hopefully, a bigger and stronger DigitalLife will return in 2009. We will make additional announcements about the future of the show when … Read more
I have never been terribly fond of adults.
Somehow, the older people get, the more venal, calculating and, therefore, swathed in self-denial they become.
I have tried hard to have sympathy with Rochelle Hoins of Castle Rock, Colorado this week. I have struggled.
Ms. Hoins was stunned more swiftly than Mrs. Lot of Sodom when she discovered that eighteen students in a middle school attended by her twin sons had taken photos of themselves using their cell phones. The photos, having been emailed, took on something of a larger life in the ether of the web.
"We did dumb … Read more
That's tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 19. Your day to celebrate the old way of buying music, where you got into your car and drove to a local store and talked to the clerk and sifted through the racks and maybe experienced the delight of finding an old CD you'd forgotten about, heavily discounted or expensive and rare. Or maybe you heard a great tune spinning in the background and bought it, like I did with The Monochrome Set's Strange Boutique and PiL's Second Edition and Wilco's amazing live CD (their best album, in my opinion), Kicking Television. … Read more
Technology and new media made Mark Cuban a billionaire.
Why would the founder of Broadcast.com and the owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks force bloggers into a digital ghetto by limiting their access to his basketball team? Isn't he a card-carrying member of the digerati?
By banning bloggers from the Maverick's locker room, that's what he's doing, according to several journalism poobahs, including the Society of Professional Journalists.
The kerfuffle allegedly began when Tim MacMahon, who blogs for the Dallas Morning News, wrote something to the effect that the Mavs needed a new coach. … Read more
Print and Web publisher Ziff Davis Media filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Wednesday, citing declining advertising revenue and subscriptions as contributing factors, according an Associated Press report Wednesday.
The company listed $500 million in liabilities and $313 million worth of assets, as of the end of December, the report said. The publisher of such print and Web publications such as PC Magazine and Electronic Gaming Monthly said it expects to exit court protection by midsummer.

Last Friday, not long after I posted my comments about the controversy associated with the appointment of Dr. Andrew Burt as chairman of the Copyright Committee at SFWA (the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America), Dr. Burt stepped down. He was replaced by Russell Davis, a member of SFWA's board and a former chairman of SFWA's Electronic Piracy Committee.
The statement by SFWA president Michael Capobianco announcing the change, as well as a statement from Davis explaining his plans for the committee, has been posted on LiveJournal.
It sounds like Davis will be effective in this position, … Read more
SOMERVILLE, Mass.--Reddit, the social news site, hosted one of its meet-ups Wednesday night at the famous local Irish pub, The Burren, in Davis Square here.
Reddit users can post links to news stories of interest that readers then vote up or down. The site also maintains a section for niche communities interested in special topics called "Subreddit."
Alexis Ohanian, a Reddit co-founder, came as...what else...the Reddit alien.
Also in attendance were many of Reddit's all-time leading users (posters get "karma" points for well-read articles), as well as several other entrepreneurs from small … Read more
On Tuesday night at an event space across the street from the Jacob Javits Convention Center, DigitalLife convention parent company Ziff Davis Media held its press kickoff event, but it might as well have been a Guitar Hero III party.
Members of the media could obtain their semi-coveted credentials; New York City technology commissioner Paul Cosgrave gave a brief talk officially designating September 24 to 30 as "Digital Technology Week"; and a set of "Hot Five" featured products--Trend Micro's Internet Security Pro, electronic music company M-Audio, the HD DVD Alliance, the Ford Sync voice-activated … Read more
