Hit and miss performance

RadarSync - Free Edition keeps your PC running on all cylinders by keeping you computer's software and drivers up to date. When we put it through the ringer, it worked quickly to perform an update scan. However, it took a considerable amount of time to download updates, and slowed down our computer's performance to the point we weren't able to continue working.

The main user interface is very straightforward, but we did find a few misspellings that lessened the program's overall professional appearance. First things first, we used the program to scan our computer for updates. … Read more

Might overwhelm beginners

KLS Backup 2008 Professional works well, but, like this publisher's standard edition, doesn't feature the most intuitive user interface. Though it successfully backed up our designated files, novices might find all its features a bit overwhelming.

The user interface has commands at the top of the window, and four panels that display created profiles, profile tests, archives, and archive content. It wasn't immediately clear what to do first, but a backup wizard is offered that helps guide you through the process. Using the wizard, we easily added the files, selected the compression level, and applied encryption and … Read more

Office 2007 adds Open Document support

Microsoft said on Tuesday that it is releasing the second service pack update for Office 2007. The collection of minor updates is available for download.

The service pack includes a collection of stability and performance updates as well as support for more file formats including Open Document Format (ODF) and Portable Document Format (PDF) files. Microsoft had said last May that it would add support for the additional file formats.

The company had said to expect the service pack to arrive sometime between February and April.

In addition to the performance and stability tweaks, Microsoft added a few minor feature … Read more

Flawed mapping system

Arceyes Superget is touted as an advanced mapping system that utilizes Google's already stellar maps functionality, and it has a price tag to match its lofty claims. In reality, the developers of this download have not put in the necessary work for this program to function, and Arceyes is a mess.

We got off to a bad start with a series of program crashes before we even saw the interface. Once we OK'd several of these messages, the primary screen opened and simply asked us to input longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates. A test proved to cause more error … Read more

Easily encrypt files

Encrypting files is becoming more and more necessary and this software aims to help people protect important documents from unwanted viewers. Bildsoft SecureDNA2007 was easy to use for the most part, but we did have issues with one of its features.

The program's user-friendly interface has all of your encryption options laid out in one window. This handy screen easily manages all the necessary encryption tasks. Simple icons lead to encrypting files, encrypting documents, encrypting e-mail, encrypting CDs, and even encrypting USB sticks. User options are kept to a minimum for increased usability, and it walks you through most … Read more

What's the benefit of 16:9 on a 20-inch monitor?

I have a question: is having a 16:9 aspect ratio monitor (as opposed to 16:10) really all that beneficial? The answer is, "It depends."

If we're talking strictly about resolution benefits, the specific size of the screen matters greatly. For example, a 16:9, 21.5-inch monitor has a native resolution of 1920x1080, whereas a 16:10, 22-incher tops out at 1680x1050. That's an extra 309,600 pixels you'd have at your disposal on the 21.5-incher. Gaming, movies, Photoshop--virtually all apps would benefit from more pixels. Yes, even porn. Or so I … Read more

Save Outlook e-mail to your hard disk

Last week, somebody contacted me about a problem they were having with Outlook:

"I work for a general contractor and have multiple projects going on. When I get e-mails pertaining to particular jobs, I place them in Personal Folders that I name with the job name. When the project is completed, I would like to move the folder onto my hard drive without losing the date.

"I have over 242 e-mails for one job alone. When I move them, they all come up with the date that I transferred them and the subject matter is gone. There has … Read more

Find temporary files

There's a catch to this program that promises to "recover" temporary Internet files from Internet Explorer's cache. It only works if the files haven't been erased using Disk Cleanup, Internet Explorer's built-in cleanup tool, or another temporary file remover.

IE Cache Files FlashGet 2007 won't help you recover deleted files, but it can help you sort through cache contents to find a missing file. The program's interface is simple in design and holds only a few command buttons, a file tree, and a pane to view a list of recovered files. The … Read more

All-in-one toolbar tries too hard, falls short

The Cash Point toolbar installs an attractively designed bar along the top of your Internet Explorer window--a nice change from many garishly designed toolbars that try to provide something for everyone. The arrangement of tools--search field, weather data, Internet radio tuner, e-mail notifier, and a drop-down list of links--isn't cluttered or too tightly packed. Still, appearance isn't everything.

In our tests, this free toolbar loaded fine, but after about five minutes of use, we received a "This toolbar is corrupted and must close" message. It would load OK in subsequent sessions, but was annoying nonetheless. We … Read more
