That includes Steve Ballmer, who presides today over what's likely to be his last financial analyst gathering as Microsoft's CEO. Sometime within the coming year, Ballmer plans to step down, leaving the scorekeepers to size up his legacy and he would bristle if anyone applied that description to him. But in his quiet moments -- if those exist -- Ballmer knows that there's … Read more
Microsoft is giving its Bing search engine an overhaul to better compete with Google.
Like Yahoo earlier this month, Bing is getting a redesigned logo, along with a refreshed, modern homepage design. But Microsoft's changes go beyond the cosmetic by introducing new features and tweaking existing ones.
One of the keys to Microsoft's new approach is Page Zero, a new search function that aims to help users get a useful response to their query before they even see a traditional search results page. Building on the traditional autofill suggestion that appears as users type their queries, Bing will … Read more
Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have lost a jet fuel perk, according to a new report.
Google and the Pentagon inked a deal, which started in 2007, that let Google purchase fuel for its entire fleet -- seven jets and two helicopters -- at a discounted price from the US government, according to the Wall Street Journal. The deal ended on August 31 and was not renewed by NASA, which sponsored the agreement. According to the Journal, the deal ended after the Pentagon discovered Google may have been using the fuel for non-government flights, potentially violating its contract … Read more
SAN FRANCISCO -- A year after he used his TechCrunch Disrupt talk to calm Wall Street fears, Mark Zuckerberg returned to that stage, a resurgent stock price fueling the Facebook CEO's confident attitude.
Zuckerberg also said that the U.S. government "blew it" during the recent National Security Agency scandal.
During a Disrupt "fireside chat" on Wednesday with TechCrunch co-founder and angel investor Michael Arrington, Zuckerberg spoke both directly to the packed hall hanging on his every word and to Wall Street investors looking for clues to the social-networking giant's future direction.

WordPress, the widely used blogging system, has built in Google+ technology that will let publishers use the service for authentication, comments, and sharing.
The deal, announced Monday, spreads Google's influence into a Web site that's very widely used for blogs and other self-publishing needs. Even as it elevates the profile of Google's social-networking technology, though, it also lowers barriers between Google+ and other parts of the Web.
Here's how WordPress' Justin Shreve described the deal:
Linking to your Google+ Profile creates an official connection between your WordPress.com content and your Google+ account. The benefit? It … Read more
Microsoft overhauled its Bing News search page on Thursday to highlight more trending stories -- both from around the Web and on social media.
"Today's news is propelled by 'likes' and 'tweets' and headlines rise and fall in less time than it takes to eat lunch," Bing wrote in a blog post. "That's why we've refreshed Bing News to make it easier for you to stay on top of the stuff you care about."
Those tweets and Facebook posts that get retweeted and liked gazillions of times will now make it to Bing … Read more
Yahoo teased us all for 30 days leading up the official reveal of its new logo. Some people couldn't wait to see the final design. Others yawned their way through the whole affair. Now that the new logo has been unveiled, we can turn our attention to having fun with it, courtesy of Bertrand Fan's Logo Designer site.
Fan, an engineer at Flickr, whipped up the site to automatically transform any word or phrase into a Yahoo-ish logo using the new font and exclamation point.… Read more
Microsoft's Bing search engine has been steadily gaining in US market share since 2010, but it still has a long road ahead in its potentially fruitless attempts to dethrone Google. Its strategy in that department -- to out-feature the no-frills search behemoth -- has proven effective in the past, and Microsoft has once again managed to keep up the fight with an overhauled video search function.
Announced Wednesday, the new Bing video search was designed "from the ground up," Microsoft's official Bing blog reveals, to put the focus on navigation and discovery while easing maneuverability between … Read more

Bing, Microsoft's search engine, has been battling in the four years since launch to convince Internet users that it is worthy of their queries.
It has doubled its US share, from 8.9 to 17.9 percent in that time, according to ComScore, and it powers Yahoo search. But Bing hasn't been able to crack Google, which has remained the search king, with more than 65 percent US share.
With share comes more revenue, as well as more varied queries and click data to improve search engine results. But Microsoft's executives don't exhibit much of an … Read more
