LOS ANGELES--Sony's revamped take on the PSP has impressive graphics, a slick screen, tons of controls, and an aggressive $249/$299 price, but all that's nothing without games. E3 2011: Sony debuts PlayStation Vita, its next-gen handheld

Sony's next-generation PlayStation Portable got its North American debut today at E3, as well as a new name--PlayStation Vita.

The device, which Sony unveiled in Japan in January, comes with two joysticks, multitouch 5-inch OLED screen, front and rear touchpads, and front and rear cameras for augmented reality.

"Vita means life," said Kazuo Hirai, president and group chief executive officer of Sony Computer Entertainment. "And we're confident that Vita will be the first product that blurs the lines between reality and interactive entertainment."

At E3, Sony apologizes for security breaches

Sony began its briefing at E3 with a mea culpa. It apologized once again for the security breach of its consumer data.

"This isn't the first time I've come to E3 with an elephant in the room," Jack Tretton, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, told the 6,000 gathered at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. So he tackled the issue head on.

E3 2011: Why isn't Apple at E3?

LOS ANGELES--This is largely a rhetorical question, as Apple is not fond of making appearances at trade shows, including CES and Computex. In fact, Apple dropped out of the one trade show it regularly participated in, the Macworld Expo, a couple of years ago. At E3, will Sony address the elephant in the room?

The E3 Expo is normally an ideal promotional event for the big three gaming hardware companies. Hordes of fans, the gaming press, and business partners hang on Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo's every word at this show to hear about the new game console or game platform they'll be introducing.
