Eton BoostSolar battery pack keeps you outdoor longer

LAS VEGAS--Off all the things Eton showed off today at CES 2013, I am most impressed with the BoostSolar charger. It seems to be something that comes in handy when I go on a picnic or do anything under the sun, literally.

The BoostSolar is basically a solar charger on one side and a battery bay on the other side. It comes with one removable 4,000mAh lithium battery. The device's 5-inch solar panel can charge the battery in 10 hours. The battery itself then has enough juice to charge an iPhone twice from empty to full.

Toshiba's Media Boxes focus on streaming first, Blu-rays second

LAS VEGAS--One could argue that Blu-ray players have been misnamed for years. Yes, they play your Blu-rays, but they're even more about their embedded Smart TV suites that serve up streaming video and music.

That's the angle Toshiba is taking, rolling our four new devices curiously called "Media Box with Blu-ray Disc player capabilities." That's more awkward than it needs to be, but it's hard not to like Toshiba reversing the importance of Blu-ray and streaming capabilities.

The specific features are broken down in the chart to the right. Miracast is supported by all … Read more

Cobra iRadar Atom detector slims down, buffs up

LAS VEGAS--Cobra showed off an improved version of its iRadar detection system ahead of CES 2013 with the debut of the new iRadar Atom hardware and a version 3.1 update to the corresponding iRadar app for smartphones.

The new hardware sticks with the sleek aesthetic established with the previous-generation iRadar 200 detector. The glossy black box still lacks a display of its own outside of a few LED indicator lights and still can be used both with and without the aid of the iRadar smartphone app on a paired Android or iPhone device. However, the new iRadar Atom is … Read more

Bolting your food? Put on the brakes with HapiFork

LAS VEGAS--Does your mom's lasagna taste better if you savor each bite as if it were your last?

It might or might not, but if you slow down when eating, chances are you'll eat less. That's the idea behind HapiFork, shown off at 2013 CES Unveiled.

The fork vibrates if you take a bite less than 10 seconds after the last mouthful. That will teach you to slow down, enjoy each morsel, and allow your brain to rein in your appetite.

After all, it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to start sending out signals that … Read more

Eversense: A programmable thermostat based on real-time behavior

LAS VEGAS--Ever since the launch of the Nest in 2011, programmable thermostats have become one of the hottest in-home technologies.

With its Apple-inspired interface and design, Nest gets the lion's share of the attention, but new competitors are hoping to steal some of the thunder. At CES 2013 here, Austin, Texas-based Allure Energy is hoping to join the party with Eversense programmable thermostat.

Eversense, which works on iOS and Android, is meant to give users the ability to automatically control their thermostats, not based on learned behavior, but on what they're doing in real time. The idea, explained … Read more

This year marks the first time at CES that the 'buds were displayed in its original and new packaging.
