Ford released details of its hydrogen-powered, electrically driven Explorer that it will unveil at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The most impressive thing about this Explorer is its 350-mile range, where many previous-generation fuel cell cars have struggled to get up to 200 miles. The Explorer's range is made possible by a big storage tank that can hold 10 kilograms of hydrogen, mounted where the transmission would go on a gas-powered Explorer. Tank pressure is about 10,000 PSI, and yes, it's relatively safe. New hydrogen storage tank technology is way beyond the thin metal walls that make … Read more
General Motors will be keeping us busy this week as we report live from the exhibit floor of the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. Over the weekend, GM announced that it would be debuting two production hybrids in addition to its already substantial offering of new model releases and special editions.
The 2008 Buick Enclave, the 2008 Saturn Vue, and the 2008 GMC Acadia crossovers were on our radar already, but the General has thrown in a couple of extra debuts in the shape of the Saturn Aura Green Line, a hybrid version of Saturn's Euro-inspired sedan that makes … Read more
After we posted the (faux) diamond-clad Mercedes last weekend, we were shocked to hear that some people thought it was a tad gaudy. So those seeking a more muted statement might find this more to their liking: a BMW covered in chrome.
The Canadian owner of said Beamer, an E46 M3, wasn't just into appearances either: According to Motor Authority, "He added a Flossman GTR-style wide body kit, supercharged the inline six motor to the tune of 600hp and then stacked the boot with an audio system that looks like it came out of a flying saucer." … Read more
Actually, the color of the 2007 Porsche Boxster S that arrived this week is called Arctic Silver Metallic, but the curved silver cladding on this car makes it look more liquid than solid. We don't have much control over what options our review cars come with, which is too bad because we would have liked to see the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system that's available on this model. The PCM is an all-in-one navigation, four-disc changer that can handle MP3 CDs, and hands-free calling unit, the kind of technology we look for at CNET Car Tech. Our review … Read more
It's difficult to imagine what customer segment the designers at GM had in mind when they came up with the idea of the Cadillac Escalade EXT. The 2007 model that just arrived into the CNET Car Tech garage boasts a dazzling array of tech features: heated and cooled front seats, a factory-installed DVD player, DVD-based touch-screen navigation, as-standard XM Satellite radio playing through an eight-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system and...an 8-foot cargo bed.
With all-wheel drive and a monstrous 6.2-liter engine, the EXT could theoretically be used to haul around stacks of 50-gallon drums or to tow … Read more
We hate to sound snide here at Crave (OK, that's a lie), but the "Motorized Cruzin Cooler" is just begging for it.
It's a made-to-order personal vehicle with a Subaru engine and a removable 54-quart ice chest that doubles as the driver's seat. All for only $1,995, according to Red Ferret. At that price, we could have stuck a Styrofoam chest on a motorized scooter and still had plenty of money left over for beer. But if you're looking to give your neighborhood ice cream man the gift of a lifetime, you'd … Read more
TrafficGauge lets you use your cell phone to view traffic conditions on a nice color-coded map showing slow traffic in red, medium-speed traffic in yellow, and fast traffic in green. The company previously launched a handheld unit showing similar information in an ugly but useful monochrome display. TrafficGauge's new cellular service enables anyone with a cell phone capable of texting and showing color graphics to get traffic conditions in 17 metropolitan areas, such as Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Atlanta.
Jaguar is the first auto manufacturer to offer its customers internet tracking of their cars. Sourcing the technology from MicroTRAKgps (a company that may one day be known more for testing the envelope of English language capitalization than for GPS technology) Jaguar will offer "JaguarWatch" as a dealer-installed accessory. It uses a combination of GPS and GSM cellular technology.
Jag owners go to a personal portal to find their car, setup alerts for keyless movement, browse its speed and location history or set a "GeoFence" which will alert them when the car leaves or enters certain … Read more
As Red Ferret reports, owners of new Volkswagen Golfs, Beetles, Rabbits and Jettas will get a complimentary guitar with their purchase. Why? Here's an explanation from First Act GarageMaster, which makes the guitars: "Owners of new VW models can transform their cars into mobile amps, with a newfound freedom to rock in the driveway, play at outdoor parties, or shred in the beach parking lot. New rockers will … Read more
If we didn't know better (and we don't), we might think that Ferrari was actually trying to overexpose itself. It may not be long before the company comes out with its own fragrance line.
