Zuckerberg on the evening news: Yawn

Let's be honest: none of us was expecting Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's landmark ABC World News interview with Diane Sawyer on Wednesday night--coincided with the Palo Alto, Calif.-based social-networking giant's announcement of 500 million active users around the world--to drop any serious bombs.

Not only is Zuckerberg notoriously, even proudly noncolorful, he's also proven remarkably astute in his ability to stay quite stoic in the face of press interrogation. He's not one of those over-the-top CEOs who likes to throw wild claims around and talk big about himself publicly. When he was grilled … Read more

Buzz Out Loud 1274: Facebook welcomes 500th user (podcast)

500 millionth, actually... but one of the press kits had an embarrassing typo in it. Also, everybody who makes slates is dropping Windows (except HP), we now have lasers shooting down airplanes, and a flashlight for the iPhone is actually a secret tethering app.

Facebook's half-billion milestone is official

One of the most hyped and least surprising tech industry milestones of the past few years is finally official: Facebook announced midmorning on Wednesday that it has reached 500 million active users around the world, an unprecedented number for a social-networking site.

Of course, everyone was aware that this was imminent. Facebook had already announced that it would be launching an application called "Facebook Stories" to commemorate the experiences and connections that people have created and shared on Facebook's network. In our CNET Conversations podcast last week, Facebook VP of product Christopher Cox talked about the forthcoming … Read more

Who will be Facebook's next 500 million?

Facebook isn't letting its milestone of 500 million active users around the world go unnoticed, with a big "Facebook Stories" user testimony promotion rolling out and normally press-shy CEO Mark Zuckerberg making a Wednesday evening appearance on the ABC World News broadcast in the form of an interview with anchor Diane Sawyer.

There will likely be a lot of talk about Facebook's roots as a wildfire phenomenon among college students in elite U.S. universities and how, thanks to its incremental spread through schools and offices and communities, there are now half a billion people flitting … Read more

Facebook 'unsure' about old Zuckerberg contract

An attorney for Facebook told a federal judge Tuesday that she was "unsure" whether company founder Mark Zuckerberg had signed a contract with a New York man who claims to own 84 percent of the social network.

Paul D. Ceglia of Wellsville, N.Y., claimed in a lawsuit filed in June that he entered into a contract with Zuckerberg in 2003 to design and develop a Web site for $1,000. The contract entitled Ceglia to a 50 percent stake in the final product, which eventually launched as TheFacebook.com, according to his lawsuit, which was filed in … Read more

The site that likens Zuckerberg to Douglas Adams

We all have a writer within us. The only question is, which one?

A quite mesmerizing site called I Write Like allows you to enter a piece of your writing and discover whose style it most closely resembles. Naturally, this is a source of huge amusement. And, after a week of stress, family troubles, and dropped calls, how can one not turn to this site for a little innocent joy?

I first thought I'd look at other people's writing, just to see who their conscious or subconscious influences might have been. So I reached for a random speech … Read more

Whoa. The full 'Social Network' trailer is trippy

A chilling piano-and-chorus cover of Radiohead's "Creep," a paean to social inadequacy, plays in the background for the duration of the full-length trailer for "The Social Network," the upcoming film about Facebook's origins.

The film's backstory is well-known--an unauthorized take on the company's history, directed by David Fincher of "Fight Club" fame, an Aaron Sorkin-penned screenplay based on the book "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich--but this is the first time that we've gotten a peek at any video footage. Previous trailers for "The Social Network&… Read more

Buzz Out Loud 1268: You've been served...a microcell (podcast)

We're hearing from more folks that AT&T is giving our free microcells to make up for its lousy service. Oh, and so is Verizon. Plus: Apple's Toyota moment, Windows XP gets a reprieve until 2020, and the undead crash their car.

Man claims to own 84 percent of Facebook

Facebook is battling a lawsuit filed by a New York man who claims he owns 84 percent of the social-networking company.

Paul D. Ceglia of Wellsville, N.Y., claims in a lawsuit (see below) that he entered into a contract with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in 2003 to design and develop a Web site that would ultimately become the social-networking giant. In the contract, Ceglia allegedly paid Zuckerberg $1,000 and entitling Ceglia to a 50 percent stake in the final product, which eventually launched as TheFacebook.com, according to the suit, which was filed in the Supreme Court of … Read more

The 404 612: Where our collective IQ is 500 (podcast)

Today's show title was originally supposed to read, "Where the manliest thing Justin Yu does is shop for a duvet cover," but since we're not prone to totally making things up for the show, we had to change it to what you see now.

This morning's episode of The 404 Podcast delves into a new antisocial networking site called Avoidr and examines a study that finally proves "older" actually means "wiser." We also pick apart the teaser for the new Facebook movie "The Social Network," and while we're … Read more
