The game responsible for getting more non-gamers playing (except perhaps Wii Sports and Madden) is Guitar Hero, an addictive mix of rock-and-roll karaoke and Simon Says. The concept is simple, strap on a vaguely guitar-shaped plastic controller, and press the brightly colored buttons in time to music note that float down the screen. Die-hard deathmatch fans have been waiting for a true Unreal Tournament sequel since UT2004 hit PCs more than three years ago. A blight on Canon 1D Mark III's record

So far, most of the reviews of Canon's high-end EOS-1D Mark III digital SLR have been highly favorable, as befits a $4,500 camera from the leader of the pack. But this week, Rob Galbraith, one of the privileged few to get an early look at the camera, issued a scathing review of its autofocus abilities.

Apple update boosts support for Canon 1D Mark III

Apple's update to its operating system Wednesday didn't just fix a security hole. Mac OS X 10.4.10 now also supports raw images from the latest digital cameras, including the Canon's vaunted EOS-1D Mark III.

The update also endows Macs with the ability to decode raw images from the Panasonic DMC-LX1 and LX2; the Leica M8, D-LUX 2 and D-LUX 3; the Fujifilm S5 Pro; and the Nikon D40x.

Report: new high-end Canon SLR imminent

Canon on Wednesday began shipping its EOS-1D Mark III, a high-end SLR (single-lens reflex) camera geared for photojournalists, photographer and consultant Rob Galbraith said on his blog Wednesday.

Galbraith quoted Canon spokesman Chuck Westfall as saying the 1D Mark III will arrive at dealer sites as soon as Thursday and that supplies should be steady after that.

The 1D Mark III is expected to cost at least $4,000 with no lenses. It's weather-sealed, can shoot as fast as 10 frames per second and has a new, more sensitive image sensor.

'Guitar Hero III' setlist takes shape

A partial track list for the long-awaited third installment of Guitar Hero was released by Activision today.

As usual, the 11-song list offers a nice blend of time-tested rock anthems by the Rolling Stones, Fog Hat, and Alice Cooper, as well as new classics by the likes of the Beastie Boys, Weezer, and Smashing Pumpkins.

In keeping with the inclusion of a Spinal Tap song in Guitar Hero II, the new game will include a song by Tenacious D.
