Why spend big bucks on graphics software when you can get many, if not most, of the same features from freeware? Here are three mui-expensive graphics apps and their free counterparts:

Cadence pulls bid to buy Mentor Graphics

Cadence Design Systems has withdrawn its $1.5 billion bid to acquire rival Mentor Graphics.

Cadence had made an offer in June to buy the chip-design software company, but said in a statement Friday that Mentor's board and management "were unwilling to engage in substantive discussions."

"That, along with our revised outlook and the present economic climate, led us to conclude that financing terms for the transaction are no longer attractive for our shareholders," the San Jose, Calif., company said.

Mentor Graphics rejected the offer last month, saying it was too low, according to Reuters. … Read more

AMD reclaims the high-end 3D card belt

The reviews are in for AMD's new high-end 3D card--the embargoed, but not exactly secret 2GB Radeon HD 4870 X2--and the official results are as enthusiastic as the previews. By all accounts, the $550 Radeon HD 4870 X2 is the fastest desktop 3D board on the market, outpacing Nvidia's flagship GeForce GTX 280 card on most tests.

Sony laptop among first to combine Intel and Nvidia graphics

Intel or Nvida? You decide. An upcoming Sony notebook will be one of the first to have the capability to switch between Intel Centrino 2 and Nvidia graphics.

Intel's new Centrino 2 technology features what the chipmaker calls "switchable graphics" to save power. When the laptop is plugged in, it uses the higher-performance--and more power-hungry--Nvidia or AMD-ATI graphics. On battery, the system runs on Intel's 4500 series integrated graphics, which uses less power.

Intel outside Apple's pending MacBook launch?

Apple might have decided its partnership with Intel doesn't mean it has to use all of Intel's products.

AppleInsider reports that Apple could be using a chipset from a different company--or even an internally developed one--in the next iteration of the MacBook, expected to arrive in the next six or eight weeks. Like other notebook vendors, Apple had been using Intel's mobile Centrino chipsets in its MacBook line ever since 2006 but it's going to pass on the Montevina version of those chipsets this time around, according to the report.

AMD CEO discusses plan to compete with Intel Atom chip

Advanced Micro Devices has its eye on the ultra-low-cost notebook market. Dirk Meyer--the company's new CEO--and other executives discussed this and ways to make the company profitable during the company's earnings conference call Thursday.

Meyer--promoted to CEO on Thursday--made it clear that AMD is serious about the so-called Netbook market, where Intel's Atom processor has been the most successful so far. (Though Intel CEO Paul Otellini made a perplexing comment Tuesday about the Atom processor.)

AMD to take $948 million second-quarter charge

Advanced Micro Devices announced Friday that it would take a total of $948 million in charges in the second quarter, sending its stock down as much as 7 percent in early morning trading.

Shares of the chipmaker fell as low as $4.60 a share in early trading, or down approximately 7 percent. AMD was trading at $4.82, down 2.8 percent, later in the morning.
