eBay Trust & Safety forum hacked

In an audacious feat, someone posing as approximately 1,200 different eBay users posted credit card information to eBay's Trust & Safety forum. For the time being, eBay has suspended access to the forum.

In a statement on the site, eBay insists that the credit card information posted does not match the accounts on record for those individuals. eBay further believes the postings were part of a hoax. That could explain the mismatch between the account information and the credit card information.

Earlier, a YouTube.com video showed the postings as they appeared on the forum. YouTube has since … Read more

Prince lashes out at YouTube, eBay and The Pirate Bay

UPDATE: In an attempt to "reclaim the Internet," Prince is preparing to file lawsuits against YouTube, eBay and The Pirate Bay, for allegedly encouraging copyright violations, according to one of his representatives.

The rock star has hired Web Sheriff, a British-based company that specializes in hunting down pirated content on the Web, to launch a legal campaign against companies that wrongfully profit from the artist's work, according to John Giacobbi, Web Sheriff's president.

Prince plans to file suit in both the United States and the U.K., and has hired a top Swedish law firm to … Read more

Buy a Pong arcade machine, stay single

As hard as it might be to imagine today, a simple game like Pong once required a machine as big as phone booth to play (which may or may not make sense, depending on whether you remember what a phone booth looks like). Even more amazing is that there's at least one of still around for sale.

Up for auction on eBay is a 1970s-vintage Atari original, which was made by SYZYGY, as every schoolboy knows. It even has fairly low miles--around 12,000 plays--considering its age, according to Technabob.

The bidding, which opened at $1.20, stood … Read more

Six flavors of Firefox

Firefox is the second-most-popular browser on the Internet, and with good reason--it rocks. Want to try out some specialized versions of it? Here are six flavors of Firefox, ranging from the Mac-centric all the way to bird-themed music jukeboxes.

Firefox Campus Edition The Campus edition is the most recent of the branded/sponsored/partnered Firefoxes. There's nothing particularly special or amazing about this version of Firefox that's different from the regular one, besides a bundle of extensions and add-ons that give Firefox a notably "social" feel. Campus edition ships with a trifecta of extensions, including Zotero, … Read more

Run multiwidget desktops with Amnesty Hypercube

Amnesty Hypercube is a small application for Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X that will help you pull bits of Web content to use as widgets. These widgets can be brought up or dismissed ad hoc, or added to your desktop as a permanent fixture. Besides its cool name (second only to flux capacitor), the service is not so different from many existing widget platforms, like Yahoo Widgets, OS X's Dashboard, or the Windows Vista sidebar. Yet the company is taking a slightly different approach, one a little closer to Yourminis, which uses Adobe Integrated Runtime to run widgets on your desktop.… Read more

eBay launches lukewarm Facebook app

Today eBay launched a standalone Facebook app to let users browse eBay and show off their auctions to friends on the social network. This is hot on the heels of their slick "eBay to Go" Flash widget that made its migration to the Facebook apps platform late last month.

The new app lets you link up your eBay account to your Facebook profile and share items you've put up for auction with your friends, along with making your eBay watch list public to friends who are using the app. The integrated eBay search will pull up identical … Read more

How much for a chrome Lamborghini?

The last time we even thought about a chrome-covered car was last year, upon being blinded by a very shiny BMW. Silly us--we thought the trend might have begun and ended there.

A fully chromed 2005 Lamborghini Murcielago is being offered on eBay with just 1,414 miles on it. The listing says the car "has been the subject of numerous magazine articles" and "has had one celebrity owner," which BornRich identifies as 50 Cent. (Clearly Crave needs to update our reading materials.)

But unlike the Beamer, this one has only chrome paint, not the real … Read more

Xcellery for sale--on eBay

Xcellery, a service that lets users collaborate on Microsoft Excel files in near-real-time, is for sale now on eBay. I covered the service in March.

I heard about the sale from the creator of the service, Reto Laemmler. He wrote to me, "There are no plans to shut down Xcellery, and in case of an acquisition [co-founder] Heng-yi and I will try to stay on board." However, the eBay listing says, "Xcellery is for sale because the founder team is focusing on other projects and cannot spend enough time on it anymore."

As of this writing, … Read more

eBay apps want to make you a power seller

If eBay's 50 percent growth this last fiscal quarter is any indication, online auctions are still a favorite way to shuffle goods and pocket extra change. Power sellers--those eBay auctioneers who sell and gross high volumes--have gained the edge by applying their business savvy and possibly using one of the many auction software options from CNET Download.com. One popular program is AlienFiles, a listings creator and editor that supports multimedia files and helps manage your sale items.

There's plenty here for power buyers, too. Check out eBay Auction Sniper and AutoSearch, for instance, which automatically bids on … Read more
